In between . . .

I ran into an old friend at an art show last night and we got to talking about retirement and how we spend our days.

I told my friend that Bob Dylan's quote pretty much sums up how I spend my days.

Today my "in between" involved a bike ride along the coast,

the requisite walk on the beach with Lulu

and not much else.

There was a bit of shopping  - I couldn't pass up the soft rainbow colors of the napkins

or the sweet bunnies on the dishes.

Steve was making pork belly for dinner so a pretty table setting was in order.

And then, there was picture taking -

a neighbor's gate . . .

my fortnight lilies in bloom . . .

a vignette in a cupboard.

We have no plans for tomorrow,

but I'm sure I'll find a way to spend those hours "in between".

  5. This is LIVING.

I am fortunate to have a job, but sometimes it's a RACE. That is NOT living, the way I see it.

Bob Dylan (a Minnesotan!) and I see eye to eye, and so do YOU and I. The pleasure of small things that unfortunately get passed over due to demands of the day are what make a soul smile. Dear friend, enjoy those in between hours today, no matter what you do. (LOVE THAT RED HEART ON THE DISH!)

  8. I love how you spend your days - we do much the same (substitute river for beach - I know, no substitute). "Every day's a holiday, and every night is Saturday night". Love your new napkins and plates, Carol, and what a pretty table. Life is good (even if we are still digging out of the snow, at least we got out for our walk. The neighborhood was convivial, with lots of people out shoveling and enjoying the aftermath in the sunshine!)

  9. Sounds like a perfect day! Soooooo jealous of your beautiful weather. I had to shovel AGAIN! lol

  13. I would not have passed the rabbit dishes either. I really can't look at dishes, because I have too many. Though I do use almost all of them at least once a year. I love your neighbor's gate. xoxo Su

  15. There's a large sign/sculpture in town that reads "Day is for resting, night is for sleeping". One of my other favourites (and I vow to needlepoint it onto a cushion one day) is "It is good to do nothing all day, and rest afterwards".
I love those little hanging hearts and the bunny plates - they'd have come home with me too!

  23. Good for you! I love your new acquisitions - to replace the lovely things that sadly gotten broken when the shelf collapsed, I hope. I hope my shelves stay up -- I have the same kind in my utility room, with some cookbooks and antique soap boxes, etc. on them.

You have so many lovely ideas, and it's so generous of you to share them with your readers (or should I say, followers?) of which I am one.

    Enjoy the day! xoxox

  24. Oh, those blue bunny dishes! I need ore dishes like a hole in the head, but still want those blue bunnies. Some days I don't get much done "in between", just get up and go to bed.

I cringed when I saw the picture of your shelf falling. You took it in stride, but I would have lost it lol

I hope you're feeling much better, my friend.

  34. Oh my that bunny dish should of been mine! As least it would have been if I go there before you! It's funny I was reflecting on how lucky I am to be retired, I do what i want, when I want. And some times nothing at all! Right now knitting up a new sweater for myself, and just finished socks for MR. C My first pair of socks I made and hope the next pair is an improvement. I'd love to wade on the beach but right now I try to avoid the puddles!

  35. Carol. Do you what I love about your posts? That you remind us all that it's the little things that bring us joy. If only everyone could slow down--no matter what their day is like--and have your exquisite eye for seeing the beauty around them. It sounds like you're staying nice and healthy--thanks for reminding me that i need to get back on my bike too. I'm starting to feel like my old self, I've been under the weather. But i'm thinking we need to pick a date! what do you think? :)

  43. We all must love to blog since we spend out times in-between doing what we love - our blog and visiting other blogs we love like yours. It is always nice to see beautiful beaches when you live in the north with snow covered yards.

  51. I have stopped my dreams of ever retiring completely where I can enjoy the beach etc.
I am just happy to be able to work to support my spending habits of buying vintage items and playing with them LOL

I didn't save enough then had a big downfall in my money back in 2008 so still working during my ripe old age of retirement

  52. If that isn't the perfect quote for those of us retired, I don't what is. Love this and will add it to my files. '-)
Love those bunny dishes. Who makes them? And tell me about the red heart on the towel. Is that a candy or an object? Gorgeous! Your staging makes me smile with delight.
