Flags For My Mother

If my mother was alive, today would be her 100th birthday.

She was born June 14, 1914 - Flag Day.

Every year, on June 14th, my father would announce to the family

that he and his service club friends were setting out flags around town in honor of mother's birthday - and I believed him.

My mother loved sharing her birthday with the American Flag so to honor her today, I set up a little bit of Americana on the front porch along with a bear I purchased for my mother the last time she ever came to visit me.

With my primary color palette, decorating with Red White & Blue is quite easy to pull off.

I changed the books on the living room cedar chest to Red White & Blue adding a metal star and a red bottle stopper.

The dining room table is decked out in Red White & Blue.

A mix & match of dishes and flatware combined with Red White & Blue flowers from the garden

 make a patriotic table setting.

The porch cabinet got a dose of Red White & Blue from the pitchers on the cabinet and the potted flowers on a ledge.

Flags,

 stars,

stripes,

and a whole lot of Red White & Blue.

I am acting just like my dad - saying that I am putting out the Red White & Blue in honor of Mother, when I am actually getting a jump of my 4th of July decor.

What great looking chairs and table! They look both stylish and comfortable, both of which are things that I guess most people are looking for in a chair purchase. The overall space looks really good, too!

Good morning my most creative friend. My daddy would be 109 and this Father's day, I will think of all the fanfare he made for ME when I was growing up. To "celebrate" one another is a great honor for the one honored and the one celebrating. Character reveals itself when someone expresses such things. Your sitting area, OMY, CAROL! The light is delicious, and I can almost feel the sea breeze wafting in through your casement windows. THANK YOU for this bright and inspiring post! Anita

Oh Carol, I love everything here! So creative - not only the vignettes themselves, but your photos, too. How cute of your dad to have you convinced all those years of the double meaning of the flags and this day. Happy Birthday to your flag-worthy Mother!

Oh- I love it--what a great tribute to your mother. It was a different time of life back then, wasn't it? Not easier but simpler-happier, I think. Your mom was such a pretty woman and I can tell your Dad loved his family..

Happy Birthday to your Mom in Heaven. You have done a grand job of decorating for her birthday AND for Flag Day! xo Diana

Carol,
Very sweet post, I found it very endearing as I read how you remember the love you felt for your Mom and Dad.
I am sure in Heaven today there are celestial flags waving and displayed in honor of your Mom.
Your sitting area decked out in Red, White and Blue is a happy space. Rejoice in remembrance of her Birthday and share those precious stories that live in your heart. As we both realize it is in the sharing we keep them alive.
Happy Saturday my very sweet friend.

Vera

What a sweet tribute to your mom, Carol. Our mothers were born the same year and my younger brother was born on Flag Day. We have the red, white, and blue out here as well. I even purchased a new flag for this year, but discovered that the old holder is too small for this new pole. I'll need to get someone to install the new one.
Thanks for this colorful thoughtful post!
Happy Flag Day!

I love this post Carol. It's not just about the decor, which by the way is adorable, it's those pictures of your family! I can actually feel what it was like back then just looking at their faces. I know. It sounds weird but it's true. I can feel the love your dad had for his family, and the way you remember how he honored your mom just goes to prove how much of an impact his actions had. Sometimes as parents we wonder if what we do matters. Clearly, in your case, it did.

What a sweet post, Carol. I love the vintage photos. What a loving tribute to your Mother. I wonder if that is why you love red so much, because of the flag.
