A Room of My Own

On January 4, I removed almost everything from the guest room.

Today, 10 days later, the room is no longer a guest room, but a "Creative Space" for me.

The bookcases have been filled

with books, magazines,

and various supplies

in labeled baskets and boxes to make things easy to find.

Finally, there is a place to display my creations

and this darling little bunting I just received from Vicky of Life on Willie Mae Lane.

A wire shelf and containers holding books and papers fill up one corner of the room.

I planned to get rid of the dresser because it needs updating, but the drawers are handy for storing paper, stamps, tools, etc.

I also like that the top of the dresser provides space for more storage.

The sewing machine base came from the living room and we used the old dining room tabletop to create a sewing station.

Wire storage pieces hang on the wall and a shelf between the windows holds portions of my hand collections and a few supplies.

A 3' x 4' trestle table we bought from neighbors provides a work station and my IKEA rolling cart allows me to keep the surface free of tools.

The table is large enough that I set out 4 different projects to work on today -  I actually completed 2 of them.

Virginia Wolff said, "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction."

I won't be writing fiction, but I will be creating - every day.

  1. I love - love your new room. A place for everything with so many charming ideas for storage. Can't wait to see what you create first in your new "room of her own". The rolling cart used for storage of your tools is a great idea to keep your work space clear.
    Does Lulu like it?

  39. Carol, I love your room. There is just something about being able to go to a dedicated room and working away from all the distractions of life. I turn music on and just get lost in mine. And then I close the door on the mess and it is contained in there. Love it.... yours is beautiful as always and love all the unique storage you came up with... Cathy

  40. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!! So glad you made a guest room your own. Too many of us have "guest" rooms and no "me" rooms. How often are the guest rooms left idle for OTHERS who don't live there full-time? Life is short...too short to not meet our own needs, not those of "occasional" guests! Craft on, girl!

  41. Carol, I just love it! Good for you for doing that. What a happy space to create in-one that takes you away from the kitchen table -one you can start a project and walk away and come back to it later-without having to shift everything around. Yes, indeed, I love it...but NOW where shall I sleep?:>) xo Diana

I hope to share a post like this someday!

I do have a room of my own, but it has so much stuff in it. I'm going to do some more reorganizing and purging.

  56. WOW...I am sooo impressed with "a room of your own". You have done a fantastic job on getting everything out and in sight, so you can sit right down at any time and craft. Very nice ! So many of us have a "guest" room and have guests maybe once or twice a year.....why not use that room for fun things, like crafting...those inflatable beds they have now are very comfy...perfect for overnight guests.
O, and I LOVE that large dresser you say is out of date. I would love to have one just like it, painted either a creamy white or jet black. It's beautiful.

  57. I could just move right in and start working. A wonderful creative space filled with inspiration and charm. Do you ever leave this room? I would be hard pressed to leave it.

  59. Wow that was a big job! Your craft room is great. It looks like there is plenty of room for the things you need. I like that sewing machine base. I have my husband's Grandmother's singer sewing machine with a wood and metal base but the wood top was damaged and missing some wood and I've been looking for ideas on how to use it. Perhaps just putting a top over it that's large enough to work like yours would be the trick! Visiting from The Dedicated House- Before and After.

I love all the wire storage and that dresser is perfect...if you were planning to get rid of it, why not spiff it up since you've kept it to use--- give it some of that Art and Sand Pizzaaaazzz!

  67. How wonderful that you got a room of your own, Carol! It looks like the perfect size to house all your storage, supplies and creations. It's so nice that you have natural light coming in with the windows, too. My craft/sewing room is what was a storage room here at our condo. As soon as I saw it I claimed it for my own. In our old house I had just a small area in the garage to create at, so I am so glad for my little room.
