No Self Control

I have been organizing and purging since January of 2016 and my rule has been "no more stuff".

But, I have been thinking about this 2' long wooden bowl since December

and I finally caved in and brought it home last week.

I convinced myself that one new thing wasn't a problem.

Then I spotted these plates at TJ Maxx on Monday and my internal debate lasted about 1 minute.

Wait, there are bowls too!!!

Seriously, how could someone who loves mix and match decor pass up

blue & white, polka dots and splatter paint?

When I set the plates in my cart, I was hoping that they would work with my mix & match Paola Navone flatware,

but sadly, the blues clash with one another.

Fortunately, I have other navy flatware

and red flatware will be fun for all the patriotic holidays.

I even found the perfect spot to keep the plates on hand.

I will have so much fun creating table settings with these dishes.

I chose the splatter paint, dots and lines for their initiation.

This photo captures my decorating style - the candlesticks don't match, the chairs don't match, the dishes don't match . . .

When I showed the dishes to my neighbor (a blue & white girl like me) she flipped a plate over to see who made them and it turns out they are Royal Doulton.

The entire collection is fun, but I will show self control and be content with my plates and bowls.

But, if I come across any of these pieces at TJ Maxx, I'm pretty sure there will be no self control.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

  3. I love the new dishes and am amazed they are RD and found at TJ Maxx. We have a HomeSense here which is the Canadian version of TJ and the other discount stores but not a great selection by times. You will certainly have fun setting your table with these dishes. They really are sweet.

  5. With a name like Pacific, they were meant to be part of your beach cottage. Of course blue and white is a no brainer too. Wonderful find, Carol! I admit I'm much more selective these days with what I bring home. Mostly just buying gifts for others, but sometimes I can't resist. Saw something today online that is calling my name. Will see if I can hold off the temptation.
    Love the flatware too!

  7. Carol, I've been clearing out like crazy, giving away complete sets of dishes, but I have to admit I would've been tempted by these! You see I'm a blue and white dishes addict like my mother before me. And now you've got me thinking ... no, NO, I'm not going to let you drag me down with you! :D Not without a fight.

  10. Simplifying and purging are great, I am all for it and doing it myself, but there must be room for a little fun. I'd say you found some... ;)

  13. Carol,
Did you say blue? Did you say blue and white? I'm afraid my self-control left when the first mention of blue. Please tell me where you found your blue and white striped table runner? No self control for that either.

  15. Carol, those dishes are so you! Love them!! The splatter design is something I would never have imagined, but it sure is fun. Love your flatware too. I really need to get some. Oh, and that heart bowl is fabulous as well! I have been trying to use will power while helping with that estate, but now and then I can't resist! :) Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  16. You are the real deal, Carol. We cave, It's that X chromosome. I love your dishes and I can bet they were a bargain, too. We need to stop the glorification of lean and simple. The heart matters the most.

  24. I can totally understand your temptation here. They are lovely, and of course I'm a big fan of blue and white. You will have a lot of fun with these. The bowl you will do a lot with too. These all seem "you!"

  25. Hi Carol, oh yes, these would have been hard to pass up. They just call your name!! Lovely table setting. Have a great weekend.

  26. Self-control is vastly overrated sometimes!😉

  27. Hey, sometimes you still have to buy some fun things that catch you eye, even if you are downsizing! Love your new bowl and the plates are so cool with the paint splatters. Sadly, Royal Doulton dishes aren't made in England anymore though.

  28. LOVE the bowl, and the dinnerware is so much fun. I wouldn't have had any self control, either! I don't blame you! I hope you can find the companion pieces soon. I'm a bad influence!

  29. I am laughing here in my studio!!!! What fabulous plates (and bowls!) and yes, I too would have snapped them up in a nano-second. Look forward to seeing them in lots of your pictures!! Good shopper!

  30. I hope your hubby got the spatter paint plate- being a painter and all. Of course I love all the blue & white mismatched pieces and your coordinating flatware. And your carved heart bowl is going to be fun to fill for every occasion! When you've thought about something that long, it was meant to be.

  31. Your new dishes are beautiful, Carol...I love the whole collection...I can see why they came home with you! Love the wonderful heart shaped bowl, too!

  32. When it brings so much pleasure it really can't be considered "stuff".

  33. Carol, I've always loved your style. What a fun set of dishes in my favorite combo of white and navy. I love the paint spot one the best. Enjoy it all. Thanks for sharing. Sylvia D.

  34. Hello Carol!

It's hard, isn't it! What I've been doing myself is decluttering the house of things that are not antique or somewhat vintage, THEN....replacing them with a few MUST-HAVE items. That's the only way I can feed my hunger for charming items....get rid of more than what I bring home! But if you have adequate storage, then bringing out a few things for each season is manageable! LOOKS GREAT!

  35. Completely in love with those fun dishes. And is it me or the wooden bowl has a weird heart shape?

  36. Oh I am laughing at this one. How many times have I started to 'clean out' announcing no more stuff! And then all it takes is that little niggle in the noggin' that says "you'll regret it if you don't take this/these home!" Loved the post and your new 'stuff'!!

  37. No more stuff! I know! But your new dishes are just beautiful :)
    Have a happy weekend,

  39. I absolutely LOVE the wooden heart bowl.....I wouldn't have waited. Your blue dishes are wonderful.
So perfect for you and your cottage.

  40. Carol I have an saying -when you heart connects, your dollars leave! I think your heart made a beautiful purchase in both the heart wooden bowl and the plates. I too have a weakness for dishes and bowls and your newest finds are stunning.

  41. Oh Carol, I would have folded too. They are very pretty and you will get a lot of use from them.

Love the bowl also - looks great.

Are you enjoying the rain - we really got some on Friday and has been raining on and off all weekend. I guess that we will be getting some more this coming week.

Stay dry and have a great week.

  42. Carol!

How could you NOT bring those plates and bowls home? The sing "Art & Sand"!

I have made it 51 days without bringing anything new into 34. I am purging, painting and rearranging 34 like a mad woman! We have guests from Idaho,( our new family ), coming to stay for wedding showers and festivities the end of March.

    Have a wonderful week!

  44. Ooh, Carol, I can totally see why you caved - on both fronts. Both of those items are so YOU, and I love them both. I am purging too, but mine has not been year-long, only each January. This year it's heightened due to the kitchen & bath projects, and I'm really frustrated with myself in how much stuff I have, yet things I see that I can't resist. I would've done the same thing you did on those purchases. They're awesome. Maybe I would've promised myself to purge something else in their place.....maybe.

  45. I can understand how the temptation was just too much! Have you tried the one in one out principle? It helps to decide whether a new item is better than anything else you have at home! Sarah x
