An Extra Foot

We have limited space in this little cottage, but I love having things on display.

In January I spotted a beautiful plate rack on Pinterest and knew it would be perfect solution to our limited space.

I searched online and found a few more plate racks for inspiration before I spoke to Steve

Rooms For Rent

- he absolutely hates to hear the words, "I have an idea...".

A neighbor said the racks would be a fun project for him so Steve designed the racks
and I found new places for the ladder and shelf

while Joe built the racks.

Last month Joe hung the racks and even before they were painted I had to to throw together a quick display.

After I painted, I took much more time in my styling, adding little bits and pieces here and there.

I felt that something was missing above the shelves so I moved our street sign - we scored the sign when the city changed all the signs at the beach to blue.

A little blue mixed in with the white is perfect for summer.

I love that I can create vignettes on the wall and grab plates quickly when I need them all without taking up any valuable space in our tiny dining room.

I could live with the crisp blue & white all year long,

but I look forward to using fall colors

and can't wait to see them decked out in red, white & greenery at Christmas.

The title of the post is "An Extra Foot" - the amount of space we gained for walking through the room.

I loved staging the ladder against the wall, but it stuck out about 15"

and the shelf was 12".

The plate racks are a mere 3" in depth

so our walking space is 12" more than we had before and believe me, that space makes all the difference in the world.

The dining room isn't the only room where we have gained a few inches of space, but that's for another post.

  12. Good Morning Carol, What a brilliant use of space. I do understand about living in small spaces because our new house is on the small size, so any ideas to increase space is wonderful.
I was thinking of having a small plate rack to hang my plates, but I love your idea. Thank you for the inspiration. Your plate racks look lovely and as always your styling is perfect.
    Have a lovely weekend,
    Best Wishes

  14. My husband just walked up and said, "What's that?" so I showed him your new plate racks and how you decorated them ... then I got so excited telling him about you that I had to get out the Cottage magazine your beautiful home is featured in. He's standing in the kitchen now, fascinated by the pictures (especially your husband's art ;) I can't wait to see all the ways you decorate your new plate rack, and I know you're both happy with the extra space.

  15. Carol, What a PERFECT solution!!! I love how it looks-clean and uncluttered but I especially love how much more space that gives you- almost a foot and a half is a lot of room when space is limited.

You did a great job on styling. Hope you have a great weekend. xo Diana

  21. I can't tell you how much "in love" I am with your built-in plate racks. Absolutely gorgeous and looks like they were the original to the house. Your carpenter friend did a great job! Believe me, I know how much an extra foot of space can make in a small house. That's what we gained in our bedroom when we got rid of our king-sized bookcase headboard. Our bedroom is only about 12x15. Made all the difference in the world.

  24. Carol, they are absolutely gorgeous! I must admit that I am a bit envious. :) I love how you styled your ladder, but the wall racks are so neat and beautifully styled. The rungs on my ladder are very slanted and I can not sit anything breakable on them. Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  28. Carol,
Plate racks are on my wish list, but so far I have not found anyplace to put them. One day I just know I will spy a spot and wonder why I had not thought of that spot before. :) Yours look perfect, and look like they were built there from the beginning of your house. Of course, I love your blue and white plates.

  31. AHHHH, Carol, I've been away from my computer the last few days, preparing for a yard sale. HOW DID I MISS THIS! Everything looks great, and you and Steve really know how to maximize the space you have with all the WOW factors. I wish we could have open shelving or something like this. It opens the area so well! Love it!

  39. OMG, Carol, as if your cottage couldn't get any better! I absolutely love those. When we redid our kitchen, I really wanted a plate rack wall near my existing pantry, but my installers were not really what I call finishing carpenters (my balcony guy was though, wink wink). I have similar pins on my virtual bulletin board for a someday look.
That looks so awesome! I bet you're lovin' the possibilities.....

Oh, the plates racks turned out beautifully...and a foot is a huge difference in our smaller home...Now I have to admit I could think of few places this would work well at the Charmer...I bet Steve is happy you came up with this idea. I could see myself catching my toes on the ladder since I've done it here.. I really love the look and a great way to display our dishes..
