at a snail's pace

It has been hot and humid in our neck of the woods-

 literally too hot to move.

Steve and I took Lulu for a walk into town yesterday

and we all moved at a snail's pace, melting with each step and

stopping multiple times to cool off.

Projects around the house seem to be moving at a snail's pace as well.

We're still working on the kitchen (waiting on the painter) so I have been simply freshening up things all over the house.

Costco mums from my neighbor were too big for the house so I had to move things around on the porch.

I found on old linen tablecloth (with a few holes) in the attic and used it in the garden for dinner, but it didn't survive a washing so I cut it up to make tea towels.

My garden window got an update with a quote (I used dry erase pens to write on the glass) and a metal garland of hearts.

I have to pick up the pace tomorrow because an blogging/Instagram, Renee of Joy in Every Season is in town and dropping by to meet me on Tuesday.

I still have a few things left on my list,

but I am not worried

because another Instagram friend @pmacaulay was in town over the weekend with her whippets

who didn't seem to mind that there are a few weeds here and there.

Although I think they had more fun at Lulu's favorite beach.

We really do need to get the kitchen finished and maybe what I need is to have more blogging friends drop by.

Does anyone want to stop by next week?

  1. If I could, I WOULD! Oh Carol, Patricia is so kind and follows me on IG! I love her whippets, and how fortunate that you have blogger pals near by who can stop by for a visit. No, I have to get on to work this morning bright and early, but I had a sensational weekend writing. The cottage looks good my dear, no worries.....sometimes we NEED to go at a snail's pace to get back to ourselves. Have a lovely day with CAROL, and she alone. Back later!

    Your cottage looks amazing.

  3. I would enjoy visiting you too. Virtual visits will have to suffice though.

I always enjoy seeing your lovely home, beach and town. Photos of your home, always inspire me.

Have a great week ~ FlowerLady

  4. I took a peek at the seven day forecast and am so discouraged. At least another week of this heat. Your garden doesn't seem any worse for the wear, though. Hmmm....a little trip to the north sounds awfully inviting. Enjoy your visit.

  5. Good Morning Carol, I would love to pop by and visit you if I was in your area of the world..... you never know, stranger things have happened. I might be in your neck of the woods one day and I would love it if I could sit in your beautiful garden and enjoy a coffee or two.
I love the Calla lilies growing in your garden they are so lovely. I used to grow them in Cyprus and they grew at such a rate because the climate was perfect for them.
I would love a little sunshine as it is pouring with rain here in the north of England.... sunshine always makes me smile, but I do understand when it gets too hot, because August in Cyprus, was so hot, that really, we did very little during that month.
Enjoy your week, I hope it cools a little for you.
Best Wishes to you as always.

  6. It would be quite a journey, but I would love to come visit you, Carol! It would be fun to talk about all things blogging, teaching and beach! PS...your handwriting on that window pane is amazing.

  7. I'll be right over! Oh wouldn't that be fun?! Enjoy the slowdown, sometimes we need to be forced to relax and this is your time.

Have a wonderful week! Love all your wire baskets............

  8. I'm surprised to hear about the humidity because I thought you folks pretty much escape that in your area. Your home looks wonderful in spite of it! The pot of mums is gorgeous. Did you cover the pot with fabric??

  9. The humidity has returned here on the East Coast of Virginia. And even though it's only in the mid 70s I feel like I need to run the AC. Your porch is so charming! I just love all of the color and that mum is a whopper! It looks so sweet in the red stripe bag - cute idea.

  10. I'd love to visit you again!! More shopping, especially at the place where I bought the tablecloth, and that antique store where we got the napkin rings, and the book store...

    Gotta win me the lottery!

  11. Oh! I would love to stop by . . . but I'm afraid the drive is too long for me. It is always a pleasure visiting your sight, your cottage is always in a process of change . . . you don't even leave things in one place long enough for them to get dusty, LOL. I don't know how you do it . . . I need your energy. Oh, your mums are beautiful, what a happy greeting as you enter the cottage :)
    Have a sweet week.

  12. Carol, I've loved reading these last few posts. Funny how, when you live at the beach, and you were considering a fall decor (love the clocks on the mantel, btw), and thinking you don't really have the season. I love beach decor, but seeing as how we live in a land-locked state, I always feel silly putting out seaside decor - but not this summer! I did it anyway - my way!
When it's unbearably hot, we typically walk around 7:30 in the morning, then stay indoors as much as we can, but our temps are cooling, and I'm dragging my feet in the mornings (reading blogs, mostly), until it warms up just a tad, now closer to 8:30 or 9.
Watch those sunburnt lips! I even have freckles on my darn lips from years past, but for about the last 20 yrs I keep a pot of Blistex DCT (spf 20) on my person constantly, and freak out if I forget one or can't find it, or run out on a trip. I think I have about 5 pots strategically placed throughout the house and my handbag at any given time.
VIsitors always keep us on our toes, and I'm finding so do blog readers. ;)

  14. I'd love to stop by and see your cute beach cottage. Too far from Texas though. We're still hot here and it feels like fall will never arrive. Love your blog and all the colors in your house!

  15. I heard about your heat wave! At least you live near the beach so you can cool off some. I think everything is looking great. Guests dropping by are my favorite motivation to clean!

  17. Hi Carol,
I'd love to stop by but I'm afraid Maine is pretty far away from you. We've had a pretty hot September here too but nothing like where you are. Still, your home and garden are beautiful and a working along at snail's pace is OK sometimes! Love your blog and appreciate all of your comments on mine...you're a loyal blog friend!

  18. I love the hearts around the window, but you already know I have a thing for hearts. We are having fall temps here and I love it. Just too hot this summer for me.

  19. You probably live in an area that feels like summer year round! Those whippet dogs are so pretty. I've never seen so many together at one time. We've been pretty hot here in GA too. It was in the 80's and 90's this past weekend. I am hoping it will cool off for good soon! I love it when it gets down in the 70's with low humidity. It still looks like summer here too. Green grass, trees with green leaves, mosquitoes etc. I think that's why it's taken me a while to get into the Fall decorating groove. Hope you'll start having cooler temps too!

  26. Carol I totally understand the moving at a snails pace. We experienced an extremely hot Summer this year, my brother in Florida had cooler days than we did. I envy you meeting up with fellow blogging friends. I haven't had the pleasure yet - perhaps soon. We were still in the 90's last week and suddenly we find the mid 70's during the day and 60's at night so Fall is finally arriving. Your Costco mums are pretty and I simply love your last photo of the flowers. Your beach photos always are beautiful and make me want to drive to the Jersey shore which is perfectly delightful since I can visit with my Grand.
Your cottage is welcoming and I'm looking forward to your post of the kitchen remodeling when it's completed.
    Hugs,

  29. Hi Carol, Your home is always an inspiration. Every detail sends ideas and you accomplish so much even at a snails pace. We had a hot season here too and a snail's pace was in order many times.
Looks like a fun time with your friend's visit and the whippets. Wishing you a great new season to begin this week and your temps cool down too.

  30. I'm enjoying the cool weather here, so I think I'll skip the visit to CA this week! I bet you guys had so much fun with those dogs on the beach! I love that picture. How fun it must be to live by the beach and host blogger friends!

  31. I move like a snail too when it's hot. I like the 60 temps to be outside doing any work. It's in the 70's here today and Im dreading that to work in.

  32. I would love to stop by! Lucky blogger friends that got to do so. Though I'd prefer to do so in February when I can't stand the bitter cold, snow and gray skies here for a minute longer! Sorry to hear it's so hot there right now though. It's been in the 70's here with clear blue skies. Absolutely perfect. Guess there's weather ups and downs no matter where you live, right? I give you and Steve a lot of credit for walking in the heat. I know when it's brutally hot here, I tend to hole up inside the house. Love how you wrote the Bob Marley quote on the window. Had no idea you could do that with dry erase markers.

  33. If I lived nearby I'd be dropping in for sure. Your home always looks wonderful. I got one of those pots if Costco mums. They sure are huge. Mine is on our back deck so we get a good view of it from the sunroom. Hope it cools down soon for you!
