Always An Oddball

I am so happy that KC is living near us and we can see each other frequently.

We shop nearly every weekend, but, shopping with KC is not conducive to keeping to a budget.

Last Saturday when we drove to Huntington Beach to make beer, we stopped at The Grove in Los Angeles on our way home.

We went into Crate and Barrel just to "look around", but I found this colorful flatware.

The flatware is designed by Paola Navone for Crate and Barrel and I love her fun shapes and colors.

Crate and Barrel

I do not need any flatware.

I already have a variety of colorful pieces to use in table settings.

But, KC convinced me that I should buy them if I like them.

So, these fun forks, knives and spoons are now

in my cupboard surrounded by polka dots and solids.

I am a total oddball because I must be the only American in blogland not featuring Thanksgiving or Christmas decor.

For tonight's dinner, I went with red, white and blue.

I love to mix and match my table setting and my new flatware is perfect for mixing it up.

My favorite part is that Paola Navone threw in a single setting of solid red with all the blue and white patterns.

My centerpiece is quite small - very few flowers blooming in the garden right now.

And for those of you who read about my great fortune in receiving the beautiful Pfaltzgraff Pistoulet dishes from Kris at Junk Chic Cottage, here is where the tureen ended up.

There isn't much holiday decor here yet - I am still trying to decide which dishes and flatware to use for Thanksgiving.

But, by next week, I won't be such an oddball.

  1. Okay- Very, very, very cute!!!!! Personally. I rather LIKE oddballs...could be because I am one myself-not saying YOU are one or anything but----well, you said it first!;>) Anyone can follow the crowd. It takes a "real" person to do their own thing! xo Diana

  2. You're not an oddball. Don't tell anyone my caramel post was reworked from last year so I could join my friends holiday baking party. Ain't no Christmas going on around here either.

  3. Do pretty and I agree with KC, if you like it you should get it!

  4. Those are cute!

I like the Grove. I took my daughter to the American Girl store. I like the street fair. Though there doesn't seem to be bargains, it's fun to look.

  5. KC looks like a lot of fun. I'm so glad you get to hang with your daughter now. And you're right. You DO have a lot of flatware hahaha
I feel like Mrs. Boring next to you. Plain old stuff over here.

  6. You are not an oddball...you are unique. At least that's what my sister always told me!

I like the flatware, you are a colorful person and you have quite the collection of cute dishes and flatware. I can only imagine your Christmas decor will be bright and happy!

  7. Carol, I love your refreshing and colorful style. Trust me, you are NOT the only blogger not showing any Thanksgiving or Christmas. My plate is so full right now that it is totally off my radar. LOVE seeing your pretty table setting!

  8. What fun! Your excitement comes through your posts so well that I feel it too! Oh...and, if you're an oddball for not having Thanksgiving or Christmas on your blog yet...then, I'm one too. I haven't even been posting. Trying to get back into it. Have fun with your new stuff and happy shopping! ;-)

  9. I haven't decorated a stitch!
Nothing in the way of autumn...thankfulness, or Christmas. Not that I'm not thankful, because I am... just haven't even thought about decorating!
I like your new flatware-- it looks great with ALL THE OTHER flatware lining your shelf. ;)

  15. Don't worry my dear; you have a "sister" here who cannot decide if she will share her humble home decorated very scantly for the holidays!

You know, it's an art to be the oddball. It is. While everyone else follows the lead (and that is WONDERFUL, however), those who choose to share what they find relevant at the moment are pushing the envelope and keeping things IN SURPRISE. I love coming to see a beach cottage ruffle its feathers and set up for the holidays, even if that holiday spirit is NOT decked out in the expected. I love your blog choices, they speak to ME, and there you go. Oddball? No. Just ORIGINAL!

  19. I know what you mean about shopping with daughters. They can talk you into things you didn't know you needed. I'm hanging on with both hands to Thanksgiving. It's always been my policy to give Thanksgiving it's due. But I have a party at my house the Tues after Thanksgiving. How am I going to be ready?? it'll all work out. I hope. Mimi

I just this morning put up my first Christmas post to join a Christmas party.... it is a reworked post from last year with a bit of new added to it to make it different. I try to hang on to Thanksgiving because it is such an important holiday... I can't wait to see what you have in store for the holidays - I am sure it will be bright and cheerful... have a wonderful week... Cathy

  24. They look great. Nothing odd about you. I like your style.
We needed new flat ware. Hubby went to Walmart and brought home some with black ends (what do you call that part of the silverware). Well the tips are continuing to fall off. In the dishwasher the ends fill with water. That's what happens when someone doesn't appreciate value , hah.

  28. Hi Carol, if the way you decorate is being an odd ball . . . Then I want to be one , too. To me your home is the loveliest in blog-land. I just feel so happy when I'm surrounded by your primary color scheme and your way of putting it all together.
If I were ever wealthy enough to hire a designer . . . you would be receiving a plane ticket :) Autumn colors are lovely, but browns and golds do not give me that uplift that I get here in your home.
    Keep Smiling,
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)

  32. I wouldn't call you an oddball at all....I call you unique! You march to the beat of your own drum and don't worry about what everyone else is doing. I love that! Your daughter is just beautiful and looks like you. I am lovin' the new flatware and tablescape. Sounds like you and KC have a lot fo fun together....I am sure she is enjoying being close to you as well. Looking forward to seeing your Thanksgiving table and I hope it's out of the box! :) Blessings, Vicky

  33. KC is so cute and looks so much like you! I am loving that flatware...don't tempt me! I love going to Crate and Barrel at Christmas time because they have so much cool stuff. Uh oh. lol You are not an oddball at all - I don't really have any Thanksgiving decor - just the same basic fall decor that I've had up since September.

  34. Such a pretty table! It's cheerful! I love your new flatware. It "plays" nicely with all your other pieces.

  35. The flatware is so perfect to go with your dishes and your style! I'm an oddball this week, too. I just haven't been in the decorating mood...YET! lol Sweet hugs!

  37. I think it is awesome that you are an oddball and that you are doing your thing! (A nice break really...I feel a bit frantic when I see so much going on sometimes but my tree will be going up soon too!) And I also love that shot of your daughter! You guys look so much alike! How fun that you can go shopping on the weekend! And that flatware is super cool! I just went to Crate tonight with my daughter and was amazed by all of the fun things I saw! Luckily 4 year olds have short attention spans which for me helps with the budget! I love that painting by the table...is that one of Steve's?? You have a great day tomorrow friend!!

  38. Love your new flatware!! I'm an odd ball too...no Thanksgiving or Christmas on my blog right now either. Too busy getting ready for my big Christmas show that starts next Friday.

  39. I love your new flatware! The pop of red is awesome. I think you are just doing your own thing, friend! You live in Cali, by the beach. There are so many themes you can work with... and there is still a lot of time for holiday decor!

  40. So happy you have Kendra living close. I love having Sandy close. Daughters can always convince us we need something.

  41. I also love your new flatware. And, did I see some new yellow flatware peeking around the corner? Your new tureen is perfectly at home in your abode...perfect colors.

  42. I actually find it refreshing to see your colourful tablescape. You have a whole week before setting the table for Thanksgiving!

  43. I have seen enough fall decor, lol....I don't put out Christmas decorations until after Thanksgving and I've been seeing THEM in blogland for two weeks already, sheesh. I DID get heartily sick of orange and gold fall stuff in my house and put almost all of it away ...just a few things out for Thansgiving now as a breather before I clutter it all up again with Christmas. So I for one enjoy your oddball post ...a sight for sore eyes :)

  44. That flatware is gorgeous! I just love how you have it displayed in the white pitchers!

  45. The flatware is so fun! You have some great colours and I really like them displayed in your cute white pitchers. By the way, you are not the only one in blogland not featuring holiday decor. There are lots out there. ;) Thanks for sharing your post at my HOME and enjoy your weekend.

    Blessings,

  46. Hi Carol, you could never be an oddball. I love your setting and the new flatware is awesome. I love your cheery colors and designs stored in the ptichers.
Hey, I haven't shared my home décor yet either, just a few things I am creating. Does that count? I have to admit, my house is decorated early this year because I want to relax and enjoy the season. Not going to rush around so maybe that is why I haven't done a post with pics yet.
Thank you for sharing your lovely home and fabulous style. You are always an inspiration.
Have a great weekend and so glad you have KC living near you. Lots of fun in the days to follow!!
    Hugs!

  48. LOL! So flatware to you is what pillows are to me! : ) Can't pass one by without debating whether or not to buy it and then half the time I do buy it. That tureen fits into your home perfectly! I think you were meant to win it.

  49. Carol,
I love the flatware. You can never have too much!!! I love your red, white and blue table. So perfect in your cute and colorful home. The tureen looks great. That thing is huge!

  50. It's always lethal going shopping with someone else. I was with my bff this week and when we were shopping she kept saying 'buy it, buy it' !
I do love the new flatware though, it's so cute being mix and match.

  51. It is fun to shop with someone else. My sister is my best shopping buddy. As much as I do miss having to set the table and get the house ready for Thanksgiving, I do not miss the cooking. I am happy that my father's wife hosts it and we just bring the pies. Alaina

  53. Carol... uhauahauahauaha, you made me laugh! I'm an oddball too then ( can't translate that into Italian properly... but I can guess the meaning!!), cause me to... most times I buy because that piece is just the perfect one, not Tthat I ne4ed it... so...well done! the flatware you bought is marvellous! I loved your table setting, it's gorgeous!
big hug from an Italian oddball! yeeee

  54. I admire KC's attitude and I am finding that the younger generation thinks differently (well, now I've said something brilliant, haven't I? Duh!), with regards to possessions, than we do. I can understand her logic, 'Okay, so you already have a few sets of flatware, but these are pretty, and you like them, and they will go with your existing ones. You like it? Buy it!' Instant gratification!

So, Carol, just look at this as a lesson in 'gratitude', after all, it is Thanksgiving! ;-D

  59. I haven't read the comments, but more than one somebody is probably glad for something other than holiday decor about now. ;-) I don't have a lot of time online so I am loving it. Something new for the table is always fun! I'm sure I would find something we need at Crate and Barrel too! Your new blue flatware is sensational! Happy Thanksgiving!

  61. That flatwear is too cool. Fits in just fine with polka dots. I can't say I actually decorate for Thanksgiving. I'm a poor excuse of a decorator. I try a some at Christmas but it's sparse.

I noticed the tureen right away. Looks great.

  62. Nothing wrong with being true to yourself or standing out from the crowd. Plus, Thanksgiving is a patriotic holiday - lookit all the vintage post cards featuring flags! The cheerful primary colors are refreshing to my eyes. Right now my dining room is so neutral if I put on a camouflage dress you couldn't find me in there. Your posts always make me smile, or think, or try something new. Glad to see you at SYC. Have a great Thanksgiving.
