Frivolous Fun

My husband and children enjoy making fun of me and my silly projects.

I acknowledge that many of my activities are frivolous, but I have fun.

In my last post, I gave myself 3 projects to "copy".

From this view of the garden, you would be hard pressed to see my handiwork

and even zooming in, it is still difficult to find any changes.

Yet when you look closely you can see that I added birdhouses to the side fence.

I really should not have used the word copy, because the photos I pinned on Pinterest were just for inspiration.

With the birdhouses hung, I was ready to make the boats and that involved a long walk along the beach hunting for driftwood.

Making sailboats out of driftwood and left over fabric absolutely falls into the frivolous category.

I moved the yellow bench to under the front window and played with my new boats.

It was a silly pastime, but I had fun.

I waver between liking and hating the large boat, but you can see that the glass bowl is full of driftwood which means I have lots on hand and I can just make another boat.

Just as the birdhouse picture led to inspiration, Beachcomber's boats were simply inspiration for my silly boats.

I fully intended to make a tray with numbers just like this one made by Linda from Itsy Bits and Pieces.

but when I saw the condition of the tray, I decided to use an old lid from either a bread box or a coffee canister.

When I went looking for numbers to use as stencils, I came across two different sets of magnetic letters hidden in my alphabet stash.

A magnetic sign that can be changed as the mood strikes seemed like a much more practical way to go.

The shelf in my creative space got an update and the best part is that I can change the sign any time I want.

I wanted to complete these 3 projects by Friday - it's Friday and I am done.

And, I must stop all of this frivolity because I have to make 50 different boxes, cut out tags and make a banner for an upcoming baby shower.

And that is serious business, no frivolity involved.

  10. The sailboats are one of the most unique uses I have seen for driftwood. Your sailboats are adorable! I think I also have flowers with bird houses pinned up too. The bird houses are so cute - maybe you'll have some house guests soon

  14. Not frivolous but inspiring! I love that you see things and then make them. I tend to admire and then move on. My husband and I have always gone on lots of garden tours. There are often great collections of birdhouses like that. I love them!

  18. You are the most productive frivolous artist around, my friend! Out of this fun is where true art comes, because art without the fun is work. I LOVE THOSE SAIL BOATS and though I don't have anywhere to put one, I still want to make one, maybe a tiny one! You know that as busy as I am as a teacher and writer, I need to escape to my frivolous world to make paper objects, my last one being a white horse. It was fun and it came out wonderful.

Keep enjoying...we benefit from everything you do.

  24. Hi Carol, I love the driftwood boats - they have been on my to do list for a year now - but, finding decent driftwood here is near impossible... we found a new more isolated beach so just maybe I will be able to pick up a couple pieces... love all your little frivolity... Cathy

  29. Don't ever worry about being frivolous,it's our right as women to be anytime we want to be! I love your inspiration and it seems like you had an enjoyable time doing them. But doesn't sound so much for all the work you'll be doing for the shower!

  35. Oh dearest Carol, your comment on my new post is so kind and I can feel the vibes through the screen - I really can. My goal these days is to learn to write well, and blogging is just one marvelous way to write and share. I have a poetry group that comes to my house and tomorrow for sure, I need to work on a poem for when they come to visit. Writing is such a personal and emotional activity, and poetry writing is different from my blogging because there are no photos used! But I appreciate everyone's comments and I just want to write beauty. Have a sensational day! Anita

  39. I don' think any of that was frivolous. I love your boats and especially the big one. I'm sure the hard part was having to walk along the beach searching for the driftwood...yeah...that had to be rough. The birdhouses are darling and the tray is genius! I saw someone buy those colored magnetic alphabet letters for kids and spray paint them (or not).....I think I need some of those. You're so inspiring. Now if you could just send me some energy to go with it. Have a nice Memorial Day.

Well, I'm frivolous too, and long may it continue.

  48. Frivolous or not frivolous as long as you are having fun is all that matters. You are just getting in touch with your artistic side. I reckon you are very creative and imaginative. I love the birdhouse, I think I pinned the same birdhouse from Pinterest so cute.
Living by the beach is like living your holiday.
Enjoy making and creating those arty things.

    Have good week.

  54. The boats are great.

I like the bird houses on the fence. That is such a cute idea.

The magnetic letter idea is even better than the original. You can change it as you want. You could also get some of that magnetic paper you could print things on to really change the look.

Great ideas. No not copied but inspired :)
