Happy Pi Day!

I was a middle school Activities Director for 20 years which means I did lots of crazy things.

One of our "go to" websites was Brownie Locks.

Looking through the list of monthly, weekly and daily crazy celebrations provided my Leadership class with a lot of fun ideas.

One of my favorite Crazy Days was Hagfish Day when everyone wore ugly outfits.

As a former math teacher and a long time dork, I decided we would celebrate Pi (3.14) Day on March 14 at our house this year.

I invited JP and his girlfriend to come for pie and they requested strawberry - easy in our area where strawberries are a year round crop.

The kids were busy today so they asked if we could celebrate Pi Day on March 13 pointing out that this year the entire month is 3.14.

The table setting was dictated by the colors on the pitcher ( a vacation memory from a week in Taos, New Mexico) and the sweet blue hydrangeas I picked up when I was buying the strawberries at the produce stand.

The table was only set for dessert because JP insists on going to our favorite Mexican food restaurant whenever he comes to town.

Simple blue place mats, favorite yellow napkins. yellow handled flatware and of course the numbers 3.14 all made a festive table waiting for the slice of red for my primary color scheme.

Alas, there are no pictures of the slices of pie topped with vanilla ice cream - it was dark when we ate dessert and JP took the second half of the pie to his friends who got a kick out of the concept of celebrating Pi Day.

If you notice on the list of "days", tomorrow is National Quilting Day so I should do a post about the quilts I have made.

Or, the little quilted pillow I am making for a blogging friend, but

tomorrow my volleyball team has their first tournament and I will be in a gym all day and later there is a St. Patrick's Day party on the lane so I won't be posting.

I also noted that tomorrow is True Confessions Day so I will 'fess up' and admit that

I have been avoiding work today
I am way behind in responding to e-mails
I have been putting off going to the gym today
and
my Creative Space could be better described as Chaotic Space.

  7. I'll be join Diana for a piece of pie. LOL - I LOVE strawberry pie.
I will never forget when I moved to So CA from Ohio - we had never heard of fresh strawberry pies only jelly.
I lived not far from a little restaurant that made home made fresh strawberry pies with miles and miles
of whipped cream on them - they were the very best strawberry pie I have ever eaten. So it's one of my very favorite pies.
What fun days you had a school.
Enjoy your weekend. Hope Steve's shoulder has healed.

  11. I should tell my daughter about the website as she is a teacher and I love Pi day as I was a computer scientist before retiring so I am all about numbers! Love them! I also love pie and many, many moons ago when I was pregnant with my first child I could not get enough strawberry pie. Thank goodness there was a restaurant in our area that was famous for it so I had a steady supply. Your table scapes are always lovely. I bought strawberries yesterday (they're probably from CA) and I was just going to eat them plain but now.....? Enjoy your weekend!

  12. The web site is new to me. I'm going to share it with my friends who still teach.
Your table setting is just where I'd like to have a piece of strawberry pie. Love the yellow and blue and the way you put the napkin across horizontally.
    Happy Pi Day!

  18. That pie looks yummy! I've been wanting to bake a cherry pie for about two weeks now - I think I'm going to have to do something like hand pies (afraid I'll eat the whole thing if I make a whole pie) :)

  22. Would love celebrating Pi day, especially with strawberry pie, with you. As a former math teacher, I love celebrating math.
Several times I have given sterling silver pie servers as wedding presents to former math students whose families I knew and was invited to their weddings. Of course, I always made a corny comment in my good wishes to them to enjoy their Pi server. They got the joke.

  29. I am so very, very behind my favorite BLOGS! Carol, you must have been a super middle school teacher. I am loving this age group because they love to still play! I just played SIMON SAYS in French yesterday with my B day kids and they loved every moment of it while speaking some French.

You were a math teacher? GOD BLESS YOU! I taught math in French for 7 years and it was a stressor for me; the language part was fun, coming up with great math games was scary, as I am not really a number person. But your idea here for PI is fantastic. What you do is brilliant. You take your ability for numbers and apply them into your art. That is differentiation to the max. BRAVO! And I love the brightness of your dining room. You make me happy!

  30. Dear Dork : Your pie looks wonderful and so does the table! :)

I have to confess that I saw one of my son's Facebook friends wish us all happy Pi day and I had to go Google it ! :)

I know, you are shaking your head sadly at me ...

  31. Good Morning Carol, I enjoyed reading your post last night on my phone, but there is no way that I can write with those tiny keys, to comment. I don't know how people do it:) I think that your Pi Day celebration is wonderful . . . you are such a clever gal. I worked eight years as an activity director in an assisted living building with 93 residents. Each year around Halloween we would have a Crazy Days Week with a new theme for each day. One day was wearing your clothes inside out. The residents loved it, but the aides would give them trouble and try to help them dress. That was a good test to see which of the aides were actually paying attention and reading the bulletin board :) Do you miss teaching? Silly question of coarse you do, but retirement is so sweet :)
    Keep Smiling.
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)

  37. Hi Carol. :)

I have that your volleyball girls didn't do so well. I bet things will get better with more time and practice.

I made a pie today on 3/15. My son's birthday is 3/14 and he requested a pie but we were gone all day. Tonight some friends are giving him a party so he took the pie with him. :)

Your strawberry pie looks amazing. It's one of my favorites. Your table is precious too. You pull the coolest things out to decorate with.

Beware the Ides of March! I got sunburned at a horse show in Atlanta. :/

I hope you've accomplished everything you wanted today during your "P" Day!!! I can't wait to read about your projects.
