Saturday I read an article that made me cry, made me smile and taught me an important lesson.
I feel I must share it with my blog friends so bear with me while I give you the lead up to the article.
Chris Prewitt, the 38 year old Assistant Principal at De Anza Academy of Technology and the Arts (DATA) was killed at 6 a.m. by a young woman under the influence of drugs. The car she was driving jumped the guard rail and struck Chris while he was running in training for an upcoming marathon.
Chris was truly an Angel on Earth.
He was my boss for just one year before I retired from teaching.
He made everyone feel special with his signature wink.
He, along with a group of high school teachers and students, did fundraising and went to Africa during summer vacations to build schools.
He, along with a group of high school teachers and students, did fundraising and went to Africa during summer vacations to build schools.
He NEVER let anything get in his way- such as the fact that he was deaf - Chris won a Silver Medal on the 1997 US Deaflympics Water Polo team.
A favorite saying of his was, "Make It A Great Day".
A favorite saying of his was, "Make It A Great Day".
Chris left a precious 7 year old daughter and his wife. I went in to help out at school just after Chris died and I cried when I saw the familiar strip of paper across the bottom of his computer screen that read,
"I love my wife, she is the Queen of my world".
"I love my wife, she is the Queen of my world".
Chris loved Spirit Days at school. |
Recently, the Cross Country team at DATA joined together with adult friends/colleagues of Chris to complete the marathon he had been eager to run. They ran stages of the marathon in relay form while carrying a shoe that Chris was wearing when he was killed. The last mile was run by all 75 members of the "Do It For Prewitt" relay team along with his wife and their daughter.
Saturday, I was sitting on the deck of our tennis club - the last place I saw Chris, on the day before he died. I was looking at facebook on my phone and saw a link to an article by Woody Woodburn. I love reading Woody Woodburn and have written posts based on his articles in the past.
When I clicked on the link I had no idea that Woody Woodburn's article in our local paper, was about Chris and I began to cry once again about the loss of my friend.
Please take the time to read the incredibly touching story of Erin Prewitt's behavior in the sentencing of the young woman who took Erin's husband and Izzy's father.
If just one person benefits from reading Erin's story, then it was worth my sharing.
And, the tears I shed while writing this post needed to be shed.
Thank you for indulging me in my grief.

( i hope he has a extended family to love them so much while he has moved on to his eternal home.) & his memory. that is tough. we all have tough moments in the life though.
ReplyDeletebig big hugs. ( :
Hi Carol,
ReplyDeleteSo very sorry to hear about this wonderful man's tragic fate. I read the article, and then researched a few others. It is a person of immense strength and faith who can forgive such an act so wholeheartedly, and indeed, forces us to think about our own personal issues with forgiveness.
Chris will be sadly missed by all.
Thank you for sharing this, sending prayers.
xx

Dearest Carol,
ReplyDeleteThese stories need to be told. We blog for many reasons, and in the process of developing our creativity, there comes a perfect time to share even deeper truths that someone out there needs to read.
Your share and Woody's excellent article are much needed stories to remind each of us that the mercy and love set us free. Oh, how they set us free.
Life and death are hard to understand, but mercy and love explain themselves perfectly when we embrace them. Thank you for this today. Hugs to you, Anita
Carol...thank you for sharing this beautifully written post and article with us. I remember you sharing this with me when some terrible things were going on in my life. His wife is a beautiful soul and such a strong lady to be able to forgive the young woman who so tragically took her husband from her. All the lives he and his wife touched will leave a lasting impact on this world we live in.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Vicky
Carol, I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend. He was obviously someone who touched many people in your community. What a difference he must have made! I really feel for his wife and daughter too. I'm off to read the article but I'll be thinking of you.
ReplyDeleteStacey

ReplyDeleteSending some warm hugs,
Aida
When I read the beginning I was prepared for another "no punishment is too hard" style read. I started forming a comment in my mind before I even read the article or rest of your post. Lets just say I didn't need to use my first thought as a comment.
ReplyDeleteWow...what a tragic story. But Erin's attitude and forgiveness is truly remarkable! what an example she is to us all.

ReplyDeleteCarol, such a beautiful tribute to your friend and so much for each of us to learn from the article that accompanies it. Forgiveness is powerful not only for the person we forgive but, more so for ourselves. Thank you for sharing. Cathy
ReplyDeleteWhat a good post for a Monday morning. Thanks for this. Forgiveness is so hard, but essential unless we are to be trapped in pain and anger. Erin is a wise woman.
ReplyDeleteI'm sitting here with tears rolling down my face ~
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for you, and for your community's loss.
Nelson Mandela was SO right.
Thanks for posting this, reminding us all of a hugely important lesson.
Hugs ~
I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. He sounds like a wonderful person whose life was cut short too early. It's nice to see everyone come out to celebrate his life in the way that they did. I'm sure he's looking down with a smile.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this, Carol. The power of forgiveness is truly a Divine gift!

Carol...so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. What a beautiful example his wife is to all of us that that have read your post today. Forgiveness can be a hard thing when something so tragic happens, but by forgiving...we can be set free from our pain and grief...and it could change the life of the person that we have forgiven for the better too.
ReplyDeleteSending hugs your way.

What a moving tribute. I sincerely admire people like Erin Prewitt who can do this. I don't think I have reached this stage of enlightenment yet, because some things seem so unforgivable.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing a bit of this inspirational young man's life. You were lucky to have been his friend.
Wonderful post Carol. So hard to share deep feelings like this sometimes, but so important. Forgiveness is something I have learned to do for myself and it has changed my life. So sorry for the loss of such a great young man and yet his family is celebrating his life not focusing on his loss.
ReplyDeletehugs, Linda
Thank you for sharing this story and your grief with us. I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face - such a tragic loss. His wife is an amazing woman to forgive the young girl that killed her husband. God bless her and her daughter. My heart goes out to you, too while you mourn the loss of your friend.
ReplyDeleteCarol,
ReplyDeleteI read this earlier, I thought I could leave a comment ... I was wrong. Came back again and reread your post, weeped for your Chris, his family but still could not leave any comment.
I'm back - read it three times now and will say that this comment comes from deep within my heart. I understand forgiveness, sadly I too understand the need and grace of forgiveness and the process of honest acceptance to move on in life.
As you know I loss my son Chris, my only child suddenly on Nov. 2nd 2013. Forgiveness and I will say unless you first hand need to learn it through death you really don't understand what it means, is the key element into acceptance and moving on.
Young life that of your friend Chris and my son Chris full of promise, commitments to family, work to complete, promises to loved ones and to themselves cut short. Children left behind ... Hearts wounded/broken and dealing with extreme pain then suddenly realization sets in there must be forgiveness to jump over the grieving hurdles. I feel sorrow for his wife and his friends but my heart feels empathy and understanding to his daughter and his parents. For those hearts will never completely heal.
Sudden death is a lesson in life's journey learning about forgiveness and finding inner strength. Tell his story Carol to everyone who will listen and be willing to understand. Talk about him, show pictures, remember the preciousness of times spent together and always remember forgiveness is necessary for acceptance. For without forgiveness there is anger, despair, rage that will be voiced and sadness that will not be addressed until the one important human trait we all are born with is exercised. The ability and the heartfelt emotion of these three words ... I forgive you.
Thank you for posting and allowing us to hear about forgiveness.
XO,
Vera
Caro thanks so much for sharing this. What a tragic loss but what a beautiful story of forgiveness.
ReplyDeleteCarol, first, I'm sorry for yours and your community's loss. How I wish I could be more like Erin. What an exemplary mindset after such a life-changing tragedy.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol,
ReplyDeleteI remember when you wrote about his
passing a month or so ago, what a goodlooking, joyful and very kind and compassionate young
man, and what a tremendous impact He had on everyone.......that is what
life is all about......
what a blessing he left behind for his wife and daughter that lead her to forgive this young girl, a monumental task at best.
A very sweet story and the best part is.... it is true,
Sounds like she and her husband both, look and behave a lot like Jesus to me..........
God Bless them for the lights they
so shine..........
Hope you are doing okay, know this had been a grave loss for you and the whole community. I loved what he had at the bottom of his computer about his wife being the queen of his universe.
Thanks for sharing this post it really is wonderful........and
so was he.... and his family.
Blessings, Nellie
Carol--I'm just getting caught up on reading blogs and this one really touched my heart. It is so difficult to lose a beloved member of your school community. Thinking of you and of his family and school family.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful tribute to a man whose life was cut so short so needlessly. Thank you for reminding us to live one day at a time and always tell the ones we love how much we love them.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Judy

ReplyDeleteIt's a tragedy that your community lost such a special man and I'm sorry for your personal loss. His wife sounds incredible, it's definitely thought provoking to think of someone so forgiving under such dreadful circumstances.
I certainly hope that the young lady in question knows and appreciates the compassion she has been given.

I enjoy reading your posts as they arrive daily in my mailbox. Although I have never left a comment I found that today I had to thank you for sharing such a profound and loving article. My heart goes out to all who called this young man friend for their loss is great but especially to his wife and daughter. Hopefully this article will be saved for his little girl as a testimony to her dad but also to the kind of woman her mother is, as she grows she will benefit from reading these words.
ReplyDeleteThis post touched me too. I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. What a fine family.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this tragic story and I want to also say sorry for your loss. I don't think I would be able to forgive like this; so thank you for the example and fig to strive to be a better person.
ReplyDeleteYour friend,
Sue
Carol, what a tragic loss and I was so moved and touched by your post in honor of this great man who was so important and giving to so many.
ReplyDeleteForgiveness is at the beginning for all to move forward in times like this. We never know or can understand just why events happen like this, but we have a higher power that has a purpose greater then all our understanding.
My heart and prayers go out to his wife and daughter. How great their pain must be and yet to be forgiving at the same time.
Carol I'll be saying prayers for you too as you grieve your friend. I am so sorry for your loss.
Sending Hugs your way.
XO
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing this inspirational story.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol, thank you for sharing this. What a strong and beuitful woman and what an example of love and faithfulness. Their daughter was blessed with two amazing parents even if she only had the one for a short time. It is a sad story and my heart goes out to them both for their loss and to the loss in your community. I am in awe of her abiding forgiveness and love.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing legacy that he has left, and his wife is such an inspiration. The author is right - if she can forgive for such an offense, why can't we forgive for petty things. It was an honor to read the article, and your post about your friend/colleague. Very touching! We will be praying for you, your community, and his family.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful tribute to your dear friend Chris. This is such a senseless tragedy and I know he'll be missed by the entire community and all of his dear friends and family. Thank you for sharing Carol.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful tribute you write for him. I am sure he will be sorely missed. Praying you and all those who loved him will find comfort.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol I remember you sharing about his death and the young girl. I am so sorry he is gone. What a beautiful loving woman his wife is. She has not only set a loving example for their daughter but for everyone touched by Chris's life. Thank you for sharing about his life and his legacy.
ReplyDeleteWow! Just….wow. What an amazing young lady! Thanks for sharing, Carol. It sounds like DATA is similar to my daughter's HS, The Alabama School of FIne Arts. Shanley was in the math and science department.
ReplyDeletexo,
RJ
WOW. Tears in my eyes. So sorry for the loss of your friend and it sounds like an awesome young man.
