Two weeks ago, I finally bought a vintage window.
You might wonder why I am behind the times, but living in an art gallery means NO wall space for anything except paintings (I'm not complaining).
I realized that outdoors was the only place for my window and created a sweet little vignette.
Only to have this happen.
I wrote here about my solution, but I was not satisfied with the result and have been doing a lot of thinking about what I should do.
This red table was my final solution.
Our red enamel topped table has made the rounds in all of our homes for nearly 40 years after Steve found it in my parents' garage.
Things did not work out - Steve earns his living as an artist and needs all the space he can get without bumping into me and my amateur efforts.
The table has been sitting outside by the fire pit since April and it has moved weekly in my attempt to find the right home.
Yesterday, I moved things around and
by jove, I think I've got it.
Steve hung the window on some heavy hooks and white chain (to blend into the walls) above the table.
The pot of flowers, little red ladder and old screen are still part of the vignette.
I added some new elements -
a little red wagon languishing in the attic will hopefully age gracefully in the sun and wind,
a burlap banner with the letters just colored in with marker,
a bucket of flowers gathered on our morning walk.
I am pleased with the results looking into the house.
I like the view as I sit on my garden bench and look across the yard.
But, my favorite view is sitting here on the window seat looking out the door.
I wish I could include sound in my post - the wind gently blows the window making the red metal heart knock against the window in a subtle little, clink, clink, clink.
Simple elements . . . simple changes . . . simple pleasures.
. . . . . . . . . . . . .

By Jove ~ I think you've got it!!! It looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteCAROL! I KNOW you've got it! ANd I love that you keep on rearranging until you find exactly what fits with your dreams and style of living. I am constantly doing that, then when you finally feel good about it, you can simply sit back and enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could mail you the vintage (but rather large) white shabby windows we have. Our cottage is slowly getting new windows (energy-efficient for our freezing winters) and we are removing AND keeping our old and beautiful white windows. But we have run out of room. My husband loves to put things together for art projects, but we are pretty much done with hanging things. So I see your window and cottage and think how fantastic you would be at doing something glorious with them!
I so love the photo of your cottage where we can see the flagstones hugged by grass (or is that moss!). Again, your cottage speaks volumes to me about my native state and it's such a pleasure to visit you. Your solution is SUPER!!! Anita
Very cute. I have an old window that I am waiting on some inspiration to use. Outdoors isn't an option here in the "wind tunnel" as my husband calls it. ;) I am always wishing I could share the sounds I hear outside. Have a great evening.
ReplyDeleteOh, I meant to tell you about how you could get sound on your blog - you mentioned here that you wished you could get sound....imagine! There are soundtracks with the sounds of waves or other nature elements! I used to have a playlist that you simply embed onto your dashboard in Blogger, but I went through two playlists that ended up being too commercial, ruining everything. BUT, you can do what I do, and that's to embed a Youtube video. If you are interested, just let me know and I can walk you through the steps! Anita
ReplyDeleteI love it all, I so want to drop by and see it all up close. You say Steve is the artist, but you run a close second. Great job! Sharing on my FB page tomorrow:)
ReplyDeleteHi Carol,
ReplyDeleteI love it all too!!!! That picture of your entry way makes me want to come and live with you and Steve. Do you think he would mind?!!!! I love that you have that precious little beach cottage to live in. I bet the ocean breezes and the smell of the ocean in the air is heavenly. That little red wagon just to stinkin cute!!!!! Love it all.
Kris
Hi Carol, yes - by Jove you did get it and everything you put together with your new window is adorable. I have red table envy - Steve may be an artist who creates on canvas - but you are an artist also - you just create with fabric, flowers, vintage things, windows, furniture and all things weathered and worn, paint, etc., etc., etc. I love visiting you to see what you have been creating.
ReplyDeleteHave a fun day.
Blessings, Erin
The window looks great & the whole thing makes for a fantastic vignette! You found the perfect spot for the table and might I add, that is one awesome table!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be sitting there with a nice cool breeze blowing on me! It's hot and muggy and I'm staying inside where the mosquitoes can't eat me alive. Your cottage is looking lovely and the window is just where it belongs......for now. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful home, the colors are superb and that includes the sky in the one picture...smile
ReplyDeleteVery cute. I love it. Like the little red wagon as well. Just love your cottage. How is the weather there.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to reply from here since my e-mails to you always get bounced back.
DeleteThanks for the sweet words.
It is mid July and we are now having the most perfect summer days. We took a 2 hour paddle on the ocean today and it was HOT! We often have overcast skies so it is wonderful to see the sun early in the morning.
It looks wonderful, Carol! It is a lovely vignette and you are not behind the times as much as I am. I do not own a vintage window but I sure wish I did!
ReplyDeleteI love it!! I have an old window I still need to bring to my new home and I will be making a vignette outside with it I think! Love that table!
ReplyDeleteLove this new vignette! Don't you love when something finally comes together? It all looks great :)
ReplyDeleteSusan
It looks wonderful! I'm always on the lookout for great old vintage windows and never seem to find ones that are both affordable and aesthetically fitting for our little home! I'm going to continue to keep my eyes open so I can get creative with one :)
ReplyDeleteVery simple, very sweet, very wonderful! Love it- and, by Jove, I do think you got it right- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteA great solution! Looks like all of your adorable stuff is spilling out the front door! Love it. Mimi

This was a fun post! I was drawn in to see what you would do! I love your table! I have an enamel table that has very rusty legs. I do like the red. Maybe hubs will paint it for me!
ReplyDeleteIt looks perfect as usual! I could look at photos of your sweet little cottage all day! This looks much more you with the colorful table! Do tell though....where did you move the sewing machine base? And...I have the exact same little red wagon! :)

It's all so PERFECT - just perfect.................
ReplyDeleteHow I would love to sit there and listen to that heart beating - with a glass of red wine
and then maybe a stroll along the sand and watch the ocean
( Ok I'm seriously going into a trance here )
Gorgeous :)
XOXO
You're right, you have! With the table and the window now being in place, you can change the vignette to go with the seasons or new bits and pieces you may pick up. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol,
ReplyDeleteYou've got the best seat in the house - now, move over and make room for me! The wagon/window collage is TOO cute! But you know, ultimately, it's a combination of the senses that make a space inviting and so, with your tiny tin heart, gently clapping in the whispering breeze, I applaud your colorful and cozy view to a sweet vignette!

That table is amazing. I love the red legs. The window is perfect and won't fall now. Can you believe I still don't have an old window to decorate with?
ReplyDeleteYou have so many cute things. And, it sounds/looks like you're having a lot of fun. :-)

Carol - what a lovely vignette. I feel like I just went for a stroll down the lane. Love that yellow cabinet too.
ReplyDeleteI love the new place you found for your pretty table! You were lucky none of the panes on the window broke, adorned with that garden banner it looks great!

Also, your courtyard is a wonderful place for spending the summer months.....I love it! Thanks for the beautiful summer inspiration, for visiting me and for your sweetest comment!Happy weekend!Hugs,Poppy
ReplyDeleteThat looks a wonderful solution to your problems with the window and the table. We have a table that was used as a base for my bath as a baby and has been used as a picnic table and also used by our children too. It has reached the age of 50 and is still in use!
ReplyDeleteSarah x
I love your solution---it looks JUST RIGHT. Isn't it amazing how we think we have something just the way we want it and we realize later, it was meant to be entirely different. We just didn't know it yet?
ReplyDeleteI find the table is so adorable and the window makes it so homey.
