Stuck Inside

I have been stuck inside the house the last few days because my lips are sunburned and blistered beyond belief.

I really wanted to be in/on the water because it has been SO HOT, but the doctor said the best solution to heal my lips was for me to sit in a dark basement for a month.

My house isn't quite a dark basement, but it is out of the sun, my lips are feeling much better and remarkably, I have gotten a lot done.

After arranging all my clocks on the mantel, I had a lot of "spare parts" so yesterday I gathered things from all over the house for a bit of rearranging.

After putting a very simple display on the hallway cabinet, I tackled the guest room.

I thought of the lyrics, "it's my party and I'll cry if I want to" as I decorated the ladder.

My lyrics became, "it's my house and I'll use coastal decor if I want to" even though it's nearly fall!

I live in a beach house, so it works for me.

I bought the beach bucket on our vacation a few weeks ago.

If our guests want to see beach houses, there are plenty of books for inspiration

and no shortage of nautical trinkets.

Once I decided that the theme for the guest room would be the beach, I even went so far as to switch the paintings.

This is one of my favorite paintings - our old kayaks at Little Beach where we launch.

Both of these displays were in the living room all summer, but now they're in the "Beach Room".

The screen over the bed has a simple WELCOME message

with a few beachy touches.

The painting above the dresser is of our family in Kauai several years ago and is one of the paintings Steve will never sell.

A few of my buckets decorate the dresser

and my shopping cart is full of shells we have collected on local beaches.

More shells decorate the side table

and my heart rock collection is in a prominent spot - the big heart isn't a found piece, but I added it for size.

The guest room is ready for family coming next month.

But, I won't be be using these spare parts today because two days out of the sun helped my lips

and I plan to be in the water

or on the water escaping this crazy heat wave.

  1. My gosh, sunburned lips! How awful!

Your indoor therapy accomplished a lot and you're healing up nicely too, both great!

Your guests will enjoy the beachy decor in the bedroom. It is all serene and lovely.

Have a great weekend ~ FlowerLady

  2. Dearest Carol! What happened? Did you spent too much time out in the sun, therefore causing burn on your lips? Are you using a topical cream? Well, you got a LOT accomplished! The cottage looks marvelous, and no matter what the season, the sea is your prominent accessory, and that works for me.

    HEALING TO YOU!

  3. I love every bit of your beachy bedroom, from shells to picture to red checked pillow shams, heart shaped rocks to vintage sand pails. May your lips continue to heal and there be no repeat of such a terrible burn. Enjoy the water but be careful!

  4. Sorry to hear about your lips! My mom had a similar problem many years ago after being splashed with questionable water at a theme park pirate show. She wore sunscreen but her lips ended up horribly burnt, bubbled and oozing. They did clear up though! your room is lovely and you have an enviable beach themed collection! The heart rocks are my favourite and Steve's paintings are beautiful!

  5. Oh my! Take care of yourself!!!!! At least your decorating isn't suffering - love all your wire baskets filled with goodies. That stepladder is gorgeous as is everything else in your lovely home.

Enjoy your weekend in your "basement".

Love how you decorated your guest room. I'm sure your family will love it too.

  7. Sorry about that sunburn, how painful! You can definitely decorate beachy year-round because of your location, and the guest room looks great for company soon arriving. Your photography is fantastic, what camera do you have? I'm going to start a Craftsy class on lighting, which is my biggest challenge.

  10. That guest room looks so inviting! Sometimes things are meant to be and your "basement" time was well spent. Glad you are healed enough to get back outdoors. Proceed with caution1

  11. Your two days inside were well spent because your home looks lovely! I can relate to being forced indoors as my summer was spent on the inside looking out at my beautiful pool while I recovered from this pesky broken arm. Hope you are better now and enjoying the sunshine (albeit with lots of sunscreen!) xoxo

  13. Ouch. Sunburned lips would be very uncomfortable. Glad you're healing. Your beachy guestroom is lovely and I think beach decor is suitable at any time of year when you leave near the ocean.

  14. That's terrible about your lips - I'm sure it's very painful! Are you treating them with anything...pure aloe, perhaps? I love the theme in your guest room and it's perfect for your beach cottage. Steve's paintings are just gorgeous and the colors are always perfect in your house.

  16. Oh no, Carol!!! I have done that! Years ago, during a college break in the Bahamas I burned my lips so badly, they blistered. They healed up pretty quickly, but even now, twenty years later, I still have to be careful and be mindful of them in the sun. Glad you're feeling better, enjoy that water!!

  18. I love what you did with the ladder after you took the clocks off! I am so excited to have found two more vintage clocks at a barn sale to add to my collection...$1 each! I have to figure out where they are all going now. Of course you have to decorate coastal in a beach house! And it all looks so wonderful. Glad your lips are better!

  21. I'm sorry to hear that your lips are so sunburned. That sounds painful. I like the theme you chose for the guestroom. Some of your nautical accessories remind me of the ones my mom put in her lake house that we visited last weekend. I think it's normal to have a theme like that when you live on the water. I hope that you start feeling better soon so you can go back in the sun. I guess you'll need some sunblock for your lips!

  27. I imagine sunburned lips to be very similar to extremely chapped lips which I know is painful. Glad to hear they are feeling better! Your home looks as beautiful and welcoming as always! Have fun on the water!

  28. We're havin' a heat wave here on on the other side of the continent. (Now I've got that song stuck in my head) Love the beach room. Plenty of time for Autumnal touches when and if the urge strikes. I am scraping every last bit of summer livin' out of the season myself. Angels to you beach girl. Guard your lips!

  29. sorry to hear about your sunburn...it was crazy hot here in Ontario at the beginning of the week, but now it is unseasonably cold...I am hoping the weather warms up a bit next week. I'm not decorating for fall yet either, I find that the seasons get rushed so much - I am hoping to hang on to summer for as long as I can...winter around here can be way too long and cold! Here's hoping you get to go back outside soon!!

  31. Ouch. Those lips had to hurt. I hope they are better soon. I haven't been around much at all, life has gotten complicated here. I have missed reading your posts. What a breath of fresh air just seeing your lovely cottage and hearing you talk about it. Hugs

  32. I hope you take care to let your lips heal completely. Big straw hats are useful, I wear one when I garden and when I walk along the ocean near our home. Your husband's paintings are gorgeous.

  33. Well bless your heart. I'm glad they are starting to heal, but remember that new skin is even more delicate. Just so you will know what I think - when you live on a beach you get to decorate however the heck you want to, with coastal being appropriate 12 months a year.

  34. Carol, I'd be delighted to be a guest in the Beach Room. Each detail is fun, but my favorites are the sand pails. Are they all vintage?

Well my friend, of course the beach theme is perfect for you any time of year. Love, love the ladder! Pinned it and I may just have to do something similar with mine next summer. Love your new pail and collection of pails! I have two, which I love. Your guests will love spending time in this 'cool' room!
