Due to the lack of space in our little cottage and the availability of decorating ideas on Pinterest, I have pretty much stopped buying magazines - I mostly read magazines on my iPad.
But, I did not want to get sand in my iPad or Nook at the beach on vacation so I picked up a few books and magazines.
I only briefly read both Living The Creative Life and How to Think like Leonardo da Vinci, but I devoured all the magazines.
I came across so many great ideas and tore pages out of the magazines so I could follow through with the ideas once I was home.
I came across so many great ideas and tore pages out of the magazines so I could follow through with the ideas once I was home.
Yesterday I looked at the pages full of ideas and started with the enamel pitcher.
It doesn't look like that much of a project, but first I wanted to paint the pitcher blue and then I tried it out in various locations until it found a home.
The pitcher ended up on the metal stand next to the sofa and I am loving the color of the flowers - does anyone know the name of the plant?
When I was at the produce stand buying strawberries yesterday, I picked up flowers so I was able to copy another idea from The Cottage Journal.
A Moda dishtowel, a milk crate and flowers made for a quick and easy centerpiece.
Before our walk this morning I changed my entry way cabinet display to bottles.
I embellished old wine and lemonade bottles from Trader Joe's.
My last project of the day is my favorite.
I loved the cabinet stuffed full of quilts in The Cottage Journal, but when I saw this cabinet full of quilts on Ranger 911, I knew I wanted to make a change in my tall, skinny living room cabinet.
First, I removed the glass and gathered quilts from the attic.
At 4:00 p.m. , I headed to the local hardware store where a kind gentleman cut my chicken wire to size and showed me the best way to attach it.
Steve was out running when I got home from the hardware store and was surprised that I attached the wire by myself and already had my photographs taken by 5:00 p.m.
I can't believe how much different the cabinet looks with the chicken wire instead of glass - thanks Vickie for the idea.
My only problem now is that I feel like a mechanic who fixed the car, but has extra parts left over - where am I going to put all these bits and pieces left over after my changes?

I am so addicted to magazines--and now so often I see my blogger friends in them! I love the pitcher of flowers. Pretty post :)
ReplyDeleteI love everything that you did but especially the quilt display... what a busy day! :)
ReplyDeleteI love how you painted the pitcher … such a pretty blue, and you're right, chicken wire adds a lot! Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteI love all the changes but my favorite is the quilt cabinet makeover. I have one in my bedroom like that and love to display the bedding that way.
ReplyDeletei love the blue pitcher with the purple flowers/blooms. so so cheerful. ( :
ReplyDeleteI have "How to think like Leonardo DaVinci" too! I love the possibilities that book suggests for any area of development, whether it's in the classroom or in your home.
ReplyDeleteDearest Carol, you inspire me every day I visit you. Your never-ending desire to organize and uplift is a sure mark of an educator, and to me, an educator has to allow the art of learning work with the science as well. I find that techniques coupled with passion work to make so many new inventions and creations, and you make it happen, right in your own home. BRAVO!!!!!
Carol,
ReplyDeleteI love that you actually took the ideas and made them work! I'm most impressed with your 'do it now' approach! Vickie's cabinet was awesome, and so is yours.
I know exactly what you mean about the pile left over. I switched up my sunroom and still have a pile too. Meanwhile, I'm still trying to purge my basement - it all seems so counterintuitive: purge, pile up, purge, buy. smh
Rita
I love how you take ideas and then make them your own,. I like to do that too! Your projects are all just beautiful, but then again, they always are! Have a blessed and beautiful Friday!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Vicky
know what...?
ReplyDeletei never look at magazines, for decorating ideas.
because i never feel the need to change aspects of house decorating.
:-) i know! this sounds so alien, to you and your readers!!! but it is natural, to me.
ahhhh well... to each his/her own! your joys are not necessarily my joys. which is fine, fine, fine. what a bore it would be, if we all walked to the same drummer!!!
enjoy your decorating changes! totally enjoy them!
and i will "toddle off" and do the stuff, which brings joy, to me.
gentle hugs,
tessa~
Oh you clever girl. I like those make overs. The chicken wire is one of my favorite things. You painted your pitcher...makes me envision you running around bare foot in the sand and holding a paint brush. :):) That is a compliment. LOL. xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteYou smart girl! I admit to being a magazine junky but rarely copy the things I see. I love what you did to make the quilt cabinet. Just save those spare parts in your attic. You'll use them again in another creative endeavor.
ReplyDeleteCarol everything looks delightful and happy. What inspired you in your magazines has embraced your charming cottage with even more charm. Which is a trait of yours that we all admire.
ReplyDeleteI have a prop closet that I use to rotate my displayed pieces. I rotate not only to keep an uncluttered look but also it gives a fresh appreciation when you move things around.
I don't know the name of the wonderful purple flowers in your pretty blue vase but I hope someone identifies them because they sure are perky cute. Wonderful changes, enjoy your weekend.
You've done such a great job finding inspiration and implementing into your decor similar ideas!! Such a fun way to freshen up our homes.
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
One of my favorite parts of being on vacation is having time to sit and enjoy decorating magazines. I love all your magazine-inspired projects, and I sure wish my leftover bits and pieces looked as perfectly placed and charming as yours do!
ReplyDeleteI have NO doubt you will find cute & clever homes for all those leftover bits & bobs...
ReplyDeleteLove the changes! sorry I can't help you with the name of the plant ~
I love the look of the chicken wire we have it on my hutch and also the doors above our small kitchen / bar area I do understand the feeling of better slow down my cottage too is not very large and can fill up way to quickly! Happy Weekend!
ReplyDeleteYou impress me so much with your ability to be inspired and create things you see in magazines and online. And, with how fast you do so many things! They all look great! In fact, they all look as good or better than the pictures that inspired you. Well done! Wow!
ReplyDeleteCarol, I love how you just got right in a created these lovely things after seeing the inspiration!!! I always think I will get around to it and hardly ever do. I love how colorful and happy everything looks!
ReplyDeletehugs from here...
I don't buy magazines any longer but do love the photos. You did so many great changes inspired by magazines! Love the quilt cabinet, I may have to do something like that to show off the beautiful quilts that my Mom has made.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Linda
I love to look at mags at the beach and will be doing that in a couple weeks. You did a very good job of replicating those ideas.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol, Steve and I always buy new books and magazines when we are on vacation, but when I'm at home I have put many a magazine back on the shelve at the store, when I look at the price. I get so much inspiration from Blogging, that my magazine buying has been cut in half. Which is a good thing :)
ReplyDeleteI am guilty of being an "In-Line" reader. When I am standing at the super market in a long slow line, instead of worrying about my ice cream melting, I grab a magazine. In the time that I'm standing there I can scan it for all kinds of inspiration. Is that wrong?
I love your cabinet re-do. You are one of my main, "Must Read" blogs. You could give Martha Stewart a run for her money:)
As for the things left from your redo, we'll see them again. Arranged differently or given a new facelift. That is what you do, and you do it to perfection.
Have a marvelous weekend.
Connie :)
Ha! You had me at changing out the glass and having photos done by 5:00!! The life of a blogger! I swear if we bloggers were running the world we would get so much done and then we would be able to post about it at the end of the day!!! That cabinet redo is gorgeous Carol! Simply stunning are the before and afters on that one! Loved every bit of this post and I will always be one to rip out of magazine! Oh...and I am not sure what that plant is but if I can figure it out I will send it to you! Happy creating today! Nicolexoxoxo
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem I have when changing things round, I then have lots of things left over to find a place for, and I definitely don't have a place for any more magazines, so I have to be strong lol !
ReplyDeleteI love the new look cabinet with the chicken wire and all your other changes. Do you ever take it easy ?
Thanks for all the inspiration, so many creative ideas here. Love your milk crate and mason jars, but my favorite is the chicken wire on your cabinet door showing off all your beautiful quilts.
ReplyDeleteYou know what? Your pitcher of flowers was better. Time for you to be in a magazine.
ReplyDeleteIs the glass easy to take out? I love that with the wire inserted and the quilts behind it. Love all your changes! Like you, I always come home from vacation brimming with new ideas. Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteLove love the cabinet and so excited you got it accomplished all by yourself. Wooo Hooo! I love pinterest (just a small addiction!) but I still love to hold onto a magazine and read it. I have oodles of magazines and love to take them outside with me when I sit to read. I guess I am old fashion and still love to hold a book or magazine in my hands to read.
ReplyDeleteLove all the inspiration and change ups.
Kris
I have a subscription to several magazines and buy one here and there on the newsstand. I don't have an iPad and I don't care to read any magazines on my laptop. (I prefer to read paper magazines.) Once in awhile, Brian and I go to B&N and gather a bunch of magazines and go sit in the cafe and look through them. I love all the creative changes you made. The quilts in the cabinet with the chicken wire is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLove the pitcher!! I have tin one that I painted a few years ago. it is displayed on top of a little chest of drawers at the end of our hallway upstairs. Love the cabinet...it looks great with chicken wire!!

Your painted pitcher is adorable, and the chicken wire is a clever idea for the cabinet. '-)
ReplyDeleteLike you, I don't often buy magazines anymore, and I've given up on subscriptions. It's all I can do to keep up with my favorite blogs and Pinterest. So much inspiration out there!

Carol you are always such an inspiration with all you do, change and create. I love the cabinet to fill with quilts. What a gem!!
ReplyDeleteYes, there is so many great ideas in our favorite magazines and I love taking mine out to the pool to read. Running out of room to store them all so I too have a couple started on line.
Looks like your left over treasures could make a display all their own.
Have a nice weekend.
Hugs
I was just cruising along through the post enjoying it, seeing all your pretties, marveling at your energy -- and then you made me laugh with that last line.
ReplyDeleteMy husband (in our early days) wasn't so handy and every single time he put something together, he had a pile of parts left over. Once a bookcase collapsed several days after the fact when it was loaded with books!
He's learned some things and gotten better (thank heavens). I have no doubt you will find a creative spot for your extras.
Thanks for the laugh.
You are always such an inspiration to me! I love all of your projects, and your quilt cabinet project is gorgeous! I love the chicken coop wire! Wow! My heart always does a leap for joy when your blog appears in my in-box. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWOW, your changes are terrific. Love the cabinet full of quilts. I have so many beautiful ones that I would love to display them, but have no cubbards.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend.
Mary
Lots of pretty things in this post.
ReplyDeleteThe bluish flower is called 'skyflower', but here's the real name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duranta_erecta. I have one of those trimmed into a tree. The hummingbirds love it!
That's the way I feel every time I do anything around here - left with all kinds of things to put away or find a place for. ARGH! Love the quilts in the glass cabinet. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI just devoured the same Country Home Magazine. And Oh my, they can be an expensive addiction.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol,
ReplyDeleteLove all the inspiration you got from the magazines and then went about and did this yourself.
The pitcher with the flowers and the new cabinet with the chicken wire is lovely.
Hope you are enjoying the weekend
hugs
Carolyn
I love all of your new creations! I would like to eventually replace the glass in my armoire with wire. But my glass is glued in. Would have to figure out a way to remove it safely. Yours looks so great! Isn't it fun to be inspired to make changes?
ReplyDeleteI'm with ya girl, small houses get to cluttered to easily! So I reduced my magazine subs to BH&G and Country living. I find Cottage Journal expensive. I do get a lot of inspiration from the, and buy mine at my antique mall, the woman always resale theirs for a $1.00. I also love how it inspired changed for you too. Love the new looks.
ReplyDeleteOH, I just love pouring over my decor mags! All your 'copies' look wonderful, especially the cabinet :)
ReplyDeleteSusan
You are just having way too much fun!
ReplyDeleteI have a blue enamel pitcher, almost a twin to the one you painted - must get busy with all that inspiration...
Talk about getting some R & R...you totally recharged you creative batteries, my friend - WOW!! Love everything that came from your magazine inspired makeovers, especially the wonderful chicken wire redo!! Kudos!
ReplyDeletePoppy
So many great ideas and projects.. I love the blue pitcher and flowers.. It is so pretty and blue is my favorite colors.. Lovely post, thanks for sharing! Enjoy your new week ahead!
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great idea to have all of those pretty quilts out where you can enjoy them, instead of in the attic.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week. I need to make mine a bit more productive than the last!
Karen
vickie inspired my quilt cabinet, too!! love your cabinet, too! i still like reading paper magazines, and tearing out favorite pages. have a great week, carol!
ReplyDeleteLove all the ideas you stole! The bottles on the top of your cabinets looks perfect! You reinterpreted each of the ideas, which is great. I don't buy magazine, but I did read part of the new Jeanne d'Arc today at the supermarket...
ReplyDeleteI love all the ideas. The cabinet with chicken wire and quilts is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI have a magazine addiction. But limit myself to the absolute favorites. I think I need to start getting them on the Kindle.
Let's see. There are so many cool ideas here but I think my favorite is the cabinet with the lovely quilts. I love how you exchanged the glass for chicken wire (at least I think that's what it is) it looks perfect now. And I still horde magazines, it's a terrible habit I can't seem to break :)
ReplyDeleteHands down my fav too is the cabinet, looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteThank's for the feature, Carol!! You've done a wonderful job transforming your cupboard and now you've got a place to show off all your gorgeous quilts! I love the blue pitcher filled with flowers, but I have no idea what they are either! Thanks again, and have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteVickie
Carol,
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing your inspiration photos and how wonderfully you created similar designs! What talent you have! I too loved Vickie's cabinet with the chicken wire and was wondering where I might do something similar. Maybe the cabinet out on my porch. I still have to have a few of my favorite magazines. Just bought the best of Flea Market Style and was going to sit down and look at it.
hugs,
Jann
Great idea showing the original idea post and then your version...fun to read.
