Every year, on June 14th, my father would announce to the family
that he and his service club friends were setting out flags around town in honor of mother's birthday - and I believed him.

My mother loved sharing her birthday with the American Flag so to honor her today, I set up a little bit of Americana on the front porch along with a bear I purchased for my mother the last time she ever came to visit me.
With my primary color palette, decorating with Red White & Blue is quite easy to pull off.

I changed the books on the living room cedar chest to Red White & Blue adding a metal star and a red bottle stopper.
The dining room table is decked out in Red White & Blue.
A mix & match of dishes and flatware combined with Red White & Blue flowers from the garden
make a patriotic table setting.

The porch cabinet got a dose of Red White & Blue from the pitchers on the cabinet and the potted flowers on a ledge.
I am acting just like my dad - saying that I am putting out the Red White & Blue in honor of Mother, when I am actually getting a jump of my 4th of July decor.

A wonderful way to remember your SWEET mother .
ReplyDeleteWhat great looking chairs and table! They look both stylish and comfortable, both of which are things that I guess most people are looking for in a chair purchase. The overall space looks really good, too!

Good morning my most creative friend. My daddy would be 109 and this Father's day, I will think of all the fanfare he made for ME when I was growing up. To "celebrate" one another is a great honor for the one honored and the one celebrating. Character reveals itself when someone expresses such things. Your sitting area, OMY, CAROL! The light is delicious, and I can almost feel the sea breeze wafting in through your casement windows. THANK YOU for this bright and inspiring post! Anita
ReplyDeleteOh Carol, I love everything here! So creative - not only the vignettes themselves, but your photos, too. How cute of your dad to have you convinced all those years of the double meaning of the flags and this day. Happy Birthday to your flag-worthy Mother!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful tribute to your Mom (and our flag). Your decorations are always spectacular. Coastal Living magazine will be calling to schedule a photo shoot.
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect way to honor your Mother, I bet she is looking down and enjoying your place. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteCarol, your house looks festive year 'round, but the addition of the extra red, white, & blue in honor of your mother's birthday makes it all extra special.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet. ♥
ReplyDeleteYour home always looks so pretty and perfect Carol. I love your pictures, just dreamy. I think that the story your dad told you was wonderful. I love those magical tales from childhood, the things we believe when we didn't know any better! Enjoy the day with memories of your mom!
ReplyDeleteSo you are thinking of your mom today every where you look! What a neat tribute. Your house is a wonderful palette for art with all your bits and pieces. It would keep me smiling!
ReplyDeleteOh- I love it--what a great tribute to your mother. It was a different time of life back then, wasn't it? Not easier but simpler-happier, I think. Your mom was such a pretty woman and I can tell your Dad loved his family..
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your Mom in Heaven. You have done a grand job of decorating for her birthday AND for Flag Day! xo Diana

ReplyDeleteCarol,
ReplyDeleteVery sweet post, I found it very endearing as I read how you remember the love you felt for your Mom and Dad.
I am sure in Heaven today there are celestial flags waving and displayed in honor of your Mom.
Your sitting area decked out in Red, White and Blue is a happy space. Rejoice in remembrance of her Birthday and share those precious stories that live in your heart. As we both realize it is in the sharing we keep them alive.
Happy Saturday my very sweet friend.
xoxo,
Vera
I can imagine your Dad telling you that. It sounds like you had wonderful parents.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet tribute to your mom, Carol. Our mothers were born the same year and my younger brother was born on Flag Day. We have the red, white, and blue out here as well. I even purchased a new flag for this year, but discovered that the old holder is too small for this new pole. I'll need to get someone to install the new one.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this colorful thoughtful post!
Happy Flag Day!
What a sweet tribute to your Mom.
ReplyDeleteJudy

I always forget about Flag Day. However, there is no way you will ever forget it! That's so sweet that you can tie it in with your mom's memory. I'm sure she's looking down on you right now smiling! You have a lot of nice patriotic accessories to decorate with.

ReplyDeleteHow lovely to still carry on your Dad's tradition, it's a lovely way to remember your Mum. Sarah x
ReplyDeleteNice flags. I was also born on the 14.
ReplyDeleteI love this post Carol. It's not just about the decor, which by the way is adorable, it's those pictures of your family! I can actually feel what it was like back then just looking at their faces. I know. It sounds weird but it's true. I can feel the love your dad had for his family, and the way you remember how he honored your mom just goes to prove how much of an impact his actions had. Sometimes as parents we wonder if what we do matters. Clearly, in your case, it did.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post, Carol. I love the vintage photos. What a loving tribute to your Mother. I wonder if that is why you love red so much, because of the flag.
ReplyDeleteI love to add red, white and blue for June and July! Your home and front patio area are just wonderful all decked out for your momma! Blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteI love your sweet post honoring your mom, and the red/white/blue look just right in your colorful home! My middle son is a June 14 boy, and we always told him the same thing about the flags. :)
ReplyDeleteI am drooling over here.. everything looks gorgeous!!!! I haven't blogged/read in forever and seeing your beautiful space inspires me.
ReplyDeleteHappy 100 to your mom. : )
I just love red, white & blue! I'm Canadian, but I've always admired our American neighbours for the patriotic zeal, and your wonderful decorating for 4th of July :) Wendy x
ReplyDeleteThat's a great picture of your parents with you and your sister, and what a great tribute.
ReplyDeleteLove this post! As usual your styling is spot on and I love that there is additional sentiment for you in this holiday decor.
ReplyDeleteHow neat. Love how your dad convinced you putting out the flags were for your mom.
ReplyDeleteLove all your decorations for flag day/4th of July.
I'm good to decorate for Christmas. Not that I don't want but do believe I'm lazy
