A Slight Change of Color

I have never loved the shade of yellow - Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Arles - on my bench.

I love the shade of yellow, but not against our Benjamin Moore Provence walls.

The bench has been in several rooms and sported several colors, but when I moved it to the foot of our now pastel bedroom - yuck!

I went to the local unfinished furniture store to look for milk paint yesterday, but they are no longer selling the powder you mix yourself.

All they had left were mustard ( similar to the Arles) and pumpkin, but I have read enough fearless bloggers that I knew I could add white to lighten the mustard color and I couldn't beat the price of $2 for milk paint.

It is just a slight change of color and when JP comes by this week I am sure he won't even notice the difference.

But, a slight change of color makes a huge difference to me.

I saw this cute little wagon at DIY Beautify and thought it would make a cute container for fall decor.

I had plenty of yellow paint left over so I updated an old "Americana" wagon.

For now, it is just holding colorful pool balls I found at TJ Maxx, but soon it will hold fall leaves and if I can find the time, a cute graphic on the side.

And now, I need to do some reading up on dog training after watching Lulu take the phone off the hook and then grab Steve's iPhone and prance through the house.

. . . . . . . .

  1. That may be a slight change in color, but in was the perfect color for your bedroom. I love it when someone moves a piece to another room and changes it with paint. Paint is the all time "Magic Wad" of decorating. Your home always looks so fresh and crisp . . . beautiful:)

  3. Even though it is a slight change...the lighter color looks great. Love it!!
Naughty Lulu, but I bet she thought she was so cute prancing through the house with Steve's iPhone.

  6. I agree the softer yellow looks perfect. I love the colors you have chosen for your home. So bright and cheerful.

  7. I like that color of yellow! Kind of buttery. Looks good there at the end of the bed. The book caught my eye.
I might need to read a book on dog parenting a blended family...(dogs and chickens)
Lulu is such a cutie. How can you get mad at that face.
The Honey caught Buster with my yarn today...he took it from off the couch where I'd been sitting and had it in the floor...I heard Honey fussing at him and he sent him outside.
But, I don't get mad at him...unless I catch him with a CHICKEN in his mouth!
-...saw you mentioned at CLH today, Pat

  8. Only $2 for the paint? That's awesome! And, the new color looks fantastic! I like it so much more than the mustard yellow before. Great job! Good luck with the dog training!

  10. When an item is shade off, it just feels wrong. I totally get how you feel with the slight change of color. It's a great masterpiece!

  11. teheheheheheheee.....I am laughing so hard right now as I recall an incident about 8 years ago when I was tutoring a child in her home. She had a wire haired fox terrier (does this give you any indication where this is going?) - OK....the dog used to LOVE to listen to me read in French, I kid you not. He'd sit on my lap while we read. I used to use my cell phone as a timer when suddenly, the scoundrel grabbed my phone with his mouth and took off! We ran after that curly monster for minutes until he gave up the booty! teheehhehehe...you have your hands full, chère!

OK, now down to business. I must get some of this milk paint because I am liking the results here; easy, quick results, and the kind I want more and more to merge elegance with European country. Carol, what a difference a hue makes! I think you made the right choice.

Thank you so much for coming to visit and yes, now teaching middle school and high school, I am having to learn the computer systems, go to meetings, and still try to write decent poetry and blog. AH! So I'm making some little changes that hopefully will help.

Wishing you and Steve a fun Sunday and LULU DARLIN'....be a good girl! Anita

  12. Lulu is looking cuter by the moment! I love the changes you made to the bench....you are like me, that slight change in tone would have been my choice in the pastel room too. Nice work Carol!

  13. Love the new yellow, it's golden tone is drabbed down. Love it:) I am in love with that wagon too, you find such adorable things. Most dog trainers won't work with a dog till there a year old, there attention span isn't long enough. I cracked up at her stealing the phones, but I am sure it wan't nearly as funny for you.

  14. Carol, I like the lighter colour on our bench. I have never heard off milk paint before! Hope you learnt some tips to help with you with Lulu, she obviously has taken a liking to the phones!

  15. The bench looks great! Oh Lulu is just a typical kid...all the little kids see their parents with phones and want to play with them so why not puppies as well? :)

  16. That does look nice- I like the paler color much better, too. Loving your Lulu- typical "baby" puts everything in her mouth- xo Diana

  17. I am very glad to be out of the puppy stage! Good luck! I do love that softer milk paint color on your bench. Makes a big difference. Mimi

  19. Loving the softer shade of yellow with that lovely bedding. You live with such happy colors, Carol. I've not tried the milk paint, but hope to soon. Just need to find a project.
Miss Lulu is so adorable. I can just see her prancing through the house with the phone. Sadie brings me socks and tees to say, "Time to play!" She will on occasion pull out the one and only toy she ever plays with. It's cute to watch this behavior.
Have a great day! ~ Sarah

  20. I love the pastel yellow! And Lulu - well, she probably needed to make a couple of calls!

  21. The new shade of yellow is perfect! Don't all teenage girls spend all their time on the phone?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have never heard of a dog that took the phone off the hook. Why Carol, Lulu is talented! Please don't "squelch" all her talents. Maybe she needs to get in touch with someone. Heck, my pupsters don't even know how to fetch. You can throw a ball. They will run after it, then run back to you without it. I've given up teaching them a thing. But you've got a talented Lulu! Take photos! She might end up on TV and you can be her manager!

  23. I love the new color. It's lighter and better for the bedroom. Amazing how a change can make such a big difference. Love that cute little wagon. I know when I get home it's time to pull out the Fall decorations. Oh Lulu, you cute thing you!

  24. I have used that shade from Annie Sloan. I admit it is a strange yellow. It looked better with dark wax for me.....it was a darker yellow than I would have wanted as well. I like it lighter. It looks nice now. Love the little wagon. I have an antique wagon in my living room.

  25. Your bench looks fantastic with the new lighter brighter color. So did you just mix up the milk paint as directed and then add a little white?

Lulu is absolutely adorable. Yesterday I went to visit the daughter of one of my friends. She and her husband have a Giant Schnauzer that weighs 150 lbs. Can you imagine? That dog is one gentle giant.

  26. The new yellow on your bench is so much better! Love the lighter shade.
Lulu's antics are hysterical. She is one smart puppy!

  27. Phew, now I'm following so I won't lose you again! I delight in all the colors of your blog. The yellow bench is a perfect transition to a better yellow. Good for you to mix the paint. I just painted a little chest of drawers a light yellow to go in a gray room. Somewhere I heard that yellow is "becoming popular" again ... whatever that means, and who determines that anyway?

  28. Love that new shade of yellow - almost a butter yellow! That Lulu is a character, isn't she?

  30. Love the softer yellow color, it really did make a difference. Lulu is so cute! And definitely growing quickly. Can't believe how big she's gotten.

  31. I like the softer yellow more as well. At least your lulu doesn't defrost the freezer. My little guy has done it twice this year :-)

  32. I like the shade of yellow too and I've enjoyed reading all of these dog stories! so funny! Have a great week!

  33. the new shade of yellow is a nice change. Good luck in training your puppy, it is a lot of work, but it's doable

  34. That Lulu... :) Love the softer shade of yellow.

  35. Oh Carol - that Lulu - just love her. I took Waldo to Petsmart for doggie training and he did great.I really like the lighter yellow - goes very well in your bedroom.
The wagon is so darn cute.
You should start a Little Lulu blog - she would be great.
    Have a great week.

  36. You taught Lulu how to answer the phone? That is so clever! I wish I had thought of that for my cats!
I love the new yellow colour, much softer and perfect in the bedroom.

  37. I like the lighter shade of yellow much better too. I didn't know much about milk paint. The only milk paint I've ever heard of is the one that Miss Mustard Seed sells. I'm seeing pumpkins in blog land wear a lot of different colors this year. Love the wagon full of pumpkins! Simply gorgeous! I may be tweaking my decor a bit this fall. For now, it's very simple. That little Lulu is a character! Next, she'll be snapping photos for you!

  39. I love the new color! I'm sure JP will notice too. But I'm often sure about things that I'm WRONG about. LOL! Love the little stars you put on your wagon wheels too. Your sunny beach sounds irresistible! You and Lulu have a great time!

  40. That's a great color.. You're right, it's just the hue that needs to be altered a bit, but it definitely made a big difference.... and, I'm loving that little wagon with the pool balls. It's fabulous! That sweet pup of yours sounds like she's a hoot! She had some girl talk to take care of, and nobody would give her the phone! Shame! haha! :)

  41. Carol - I do love that new shade of yellow - it looks lovely in your room. I am with Heather - I think Lulu wants to make a call - she needs an IPhone, too!!

  42. Hi Carol. The subtle change of yellow color does make an impact! Tones of yellow are a favorite of mine. I got a nice giggle out of Lulu running around with a phone in her mouth.

  43. Love the new shade of yellow. I think you got it just right!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Carol, I completely understand your need to change the hue/shade of the bench, especially since you have such an eye for colour and also since you love your primaries, like me! This new hue, to me, looks more neutral and softer, which is perfect in the room, complementing the overall scheme much more effectively! Very pretty!

  46. The paler shade seems to fit much better with your bedroom and $2 is just amazing. I tried some MMS milk paint recently (a UK friend is selling it over here and sent me a sample)and I liked it, but found it hard to get the lumps out. I'm going to try more, but I know it won't be $2 !

  47. I love the color change..it looks much softer. I also like all your fall accents...so whimsical.

  48. You're right. You can go so wrong with yellow so fast. I didn't mind the darker yellow, though, but agree that the lighter yellow is much better.
