From Duvet to Tablecloth


Last Sunday when I spent 4 hours working in the attic, I came across lots of things I had forgotten I even had.

I found a quilt and pillow shams to redo our bedroom, white fabric for new bedroom curtains, and some great vintage tablecloths of my mother's.

I also found a denim duvet cover from KC's college days and knew just how I would use it.


 I laid out my favorite white tablecloth on top of the duvet, cut around the tablecloth, hemmed the edge and VOILA! - I have a new tablecloth.

When I cut out the tablecloth, I ended up with 2 pieces and enough scraps to make a second tablecloth with a ruffled edge.


It was a beautiful sunny day so I set the table in garden using my fun new polka dot flatware.

 The blue bucket was hiding in the attic and it was full of shells.


Steve barbecued sword fish and we sat in the garden enjoying the evening.

Tomorrow's project is new bedroom curtains.


And, creating a birdbath out of this rusted bucket.

    Oh how fun to find all of those things. I love it when I find treasures.
    The tablecloth looks really good and your tablescape. I see the chairs yours looks so much better. My friend had stained them kinda rust to go with her safari theme. Looking forward to seeing your new curtains.

    SWORDFISH? I haven't had that in years. We can't get it out here in Minneapolis....but red snapper, swordfish and halibut were part of our diet back in the days in California. What bliss, Carol! The garden looks fabulous with your signature reds and blues, whites and sunlight to warm the moment.

    Your comment truly made my day, and I'm not just saying that. I have been taking a poetry class that has challenged me and I have doubted my abilities; this post stems from a frustration yet a lesson learned about setting high goals.     Attic shopping is the best kind of shopping! And blue denim just gets better with age. Your projects make me think of the old WW II slogan to use it up and make it last, such satisfaction in completing a sewing project like yours.

    Great idea! I have an old purple duvet that I don't use and I wanted a dark tablecloth for Hallowe'en, but didn't want to buy one... I guess you just told me what to do! I'm impatient to see your new curtains. I'm not much of a seamstress, so I love to see what others can do.

    Carol, you have such a charming garden. I would never leave it! What a perfect place for a glass of wine or dinner. Your tablecloth turned out so well and a birdbath out of a bucket - I cannot imagine how your incredible, creative brain keeps coming up with these fantastic projects!

    I love finding something that will work for another. I recently found a duvet cover that worked as curtains and a table cloth too. Love how yours turned out...very nice.

    Great tablecloth! You never know what treasures you'll find when you dig through your attic or basement (as in my case). Does that mean we need to purge?!

    You make me feel so deprived that I have no attic! LOL! We don't even have a garage! Yours is like a magic hat that you pull wonderful things out of. Love the tablecloth. Ruffles sound cute too!     I will jump on over! That birdbath is beyond cool lady! And taking that old duvet and making it into a tablecloth...seriously awesome! Why don't more people reuse things...just look at what you can do!!! How inspiring!!! You have given me some ideas for an old comforter that I have know idea what to do with....just wished you lived closer so that you could give me some quick refresh lessons on the sewing machine! I would pay you!!!! Cheers to you! Your garden room is stunning!!!
