Joining the 21st Century

This old house was built in 1928 and at 90, some parts are not working the way they used to - believe me I can totally relate.

In July Steve said it was time to bite the bullet and bring our early 1900's bathroom into the 21st century.

The end result made the 6 weeks of chaos and dust ( you can read about it here ) worthwhile.

In 6 years of blogging, I only did one post about the bathroom which should tell you how bad it looked.

The only things we reused are the pedestal sink and this shower curtain - I just haven't found another one that I like yet.

We were thrilled to remove this cabinet - we needed the storage, but in a small 5'x7' bathroom, that cabinet took up prime real estate.

We like the cabinet and hated to toss it so I found feet on Amazon and now it's a mini cabinet in my She Shed.

On Fixer Upper, Chip makes Demo Day look so easy, but this is our bathroom at the end of Demo Day #5.

Here is the bathroom a month in with a couple of weeks left - there are always glitches like the plumber's wife going into labor on the day he was scheduled at our house and our two getaways in September.

We love how our builder took a limited amount of space and created a bathroom with a spacious feel.

The woodworker created custom cabinets

that are deep enough to store extra toilet paper

and even hide our electric tooth brushes.

It's funny how small details please me like this custom medicine cabinet instead of a stock pop-in.

One way we created a more spacious feel was to remove the tub - Steve and I are old (and getting older) and stepping into a tub is something we no longer want to do - without a tub, the eye travels all the way to the wall.

We wanted only the towel rack and a sign on this wall.

I found the sign painted on glass and the lettering provided just the amount of color I was looking for.

Originally I tied the black and white ribbon around the towels just for the photos, but I kept it when my neighbor brought me over the cutest little Halloween hand towels.

The original tile was white with black hexagons (far fewer black tiles) - I chose black grout because all the bathrooms that jumped out at me on Pinterest had white subway tile with black grout.

We found the lights at Lamp Plus on our first outing to find all the items we needed to select for the remodel.

I wish I had a before pic of the old bathroom to show the change

because it still amazes us that this is the same room.

  1. Your bath is just lovely. We also have a small bathroom and I really appreciate all the details that make yours seem so much more spacious. We, too, are upgrading to a walk in shower. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Beautiful . . . I love, love, love your shower. It keeps the vintage style that goes with your cottage and yet gives you that up date and clean lines of today. The perfect blend. You were very smart to do the black grout, it not only makes the tiles pop but it will be so much easier to clean. White grout can stain so easily and nothing looks grubbier than strained grout. I'm sure you smile every time to go in there . . . oh, love the bathroom sign on the door. I would love to find one like that.

  5. This turned out great, true and classic. The small cabinet is perfect in your shed too! I think black grout is the right choice.

  6. I absolutely love your bathroom! All the details are just perfect, including those awesome lighting fixtures. The sign adds just the right amount of whimsy. I'd have to have a tub though, even as I get older. I'm mostly a shower person, but I love to soak in a hot bath once in awhile, but especially in winter. I know you don't have that problem there. ;-)

  7. Carol it's amazing! And it's classic style still fits your charming 1920's home. I love that. PS- that sign is adorable!

  10. Such a great redo! I love a step in shower and have wanted to take out our tub and replace it with a built in shower like yours.

  11. Ok Carol love the sign too fun!!! We too feel like a bathroom does not need a tub anymore. Just gives you more space for sure. I love the tiles so much. Goes with the character of the house and gives an open feel. So worth the wait to get this brand new bathroom. I bet you smile every morning when you take your shower. Beautiful.

  13. Carol!!!!!!! I can totally relate to the bathroom remodel; I too had never posted photos of our main bathroom because it was 1941 UGLY. Plastic pink tiling, an old tub and a horrific floor made us realize that we could no longer use this room. Ruben took out the tub, gutted the entire room and he built a walk-in shower, just like yours. Isn't it amazing how much bigger the room appears? Yours is exquisitely done and still has a 1920s feel. YOU must be loving it now!

  14. I just love the way your bathroom turned out, Carol! This project surely makes you feel fresh and new in your wonderful cottage. Taking the tub out was such a good idea. Who needs it? Love everything you chose.

  15. I love your bathroom remodel! The black and tile work are gorgeous!p. We built our ‘retirement home’ two years ago and opted for a walk-in shower and no tub, as well. We are so happy with that decision and know you will be, too. Enjoy!!

  16. Oh my mercy! I love this bathroom. How lovely. I see in the near future having to re-do my master bath which is not big but not really small. Just normal size but in need of some things being re-done. I love your bath/shower. Beautiful. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  19. OOO...it is AWESOME...I love every bit of it.
I agree that as we age, we don't need a bathtub..I have just a shower and love it. Too hard climbing out of a tub. We also have a pedestal sink...my first...and love it. I have an antique washstand beside it. I really like the tile you chose as well as your light fixtures...It all looks so clean, neat and most of all, so cute.

  23. Hi Carol!

I love your new bathroom! I love the tiles with the black grout. That looks fantastic! I love the outlet inside the bathroom cabinet. What a brilliant idea! I'm going to ask my husband if we can do that. Thank you!

    Have a wonderful day!

  25. So beautiful! And you will be happy with the black grout--except I guess where you live you don't have to fight mildew like we do over here on the east coast. I like how you have the outlet inside the cabinet for the tooth brushes! Outstanding and well done! ~ Podso

  27. Just LOVE your re-do on the bathroom Carol! In such a tiny space, you have remarkably opened the space up to feel light, spacious and airy! I love the change from the tub to the shower, and the gorgeous white and black combo... and of course what a brilliant idea to add the outlet inside the cabinet! You must be so thrilled after all the dust has settled and you can enjoy it now :)

  28. I really love your new bathroom. It suits the home perfectly. My parents had a home is now over a hundred, and it had those tiles, and I always have loved them. Black grout was the best choice because it shows no dirt. Was it an old cast iron tub that they removed? I eventually see this in my future, due to old injuries, but still doing okay so far. My dad is a plumber, and our type of cast iron will be a beast to get out if we ever get to that point. It is in place, not a claw foot, so the bathroom was built around it, and it won't fit out the bathroom door in one piece. xoxo Su

  29. I just had to come back by and tell you that as soon as I found out your She Shed was on a calendar, I ordered one and it came today. What a fun calendar to have. You are blessed to have so much talent that your home AND your she shed are published. I am walking all around outside to see how I can have a small she shed built....we have a darling green house but it is totally full of plants most of the year. I have the use of some beautiful areas around here, but I would LOVE a tiny she shed.
Have you seen Ash Tree Cottage's she shed? If not, take a quick look...it is adorable, too. ashtreecottage.blogspot.com

  30. Aww I'm in love!!! I agree, no need for a bulky tub taking precious space. You know your tile selection is also my very favorite! :D The subway tile going all the way to the ceiling and up on the outside of the shower gives the bath lots of height and the black grout gives it a nice contrast. The cabinets and light fixtures are gorgeous too. It's beautiful and i know it's a bathroom that's not gonna go out of style!

  31. Carol- That Co-Coya comment is spam in case you don't know already. Your bathroom looks fantastic. It has a real spa-like feel to it. The next bathroom I do is going to have subway tiling, too. It is timeless. You did a perfect job coordinating everything and it turned out to be absolutely perfect.

I hope you have a great weekend, Carol. xo Diana
