An Unexpected Pleasure

A year ago I was contacted by the editor of Cottages and Bungalows magazine about featuring our house in the magazine.

I posted this pic on Instagram the morning of the photo shoot last November - I recall being excited, nervous and pinching myself to see if it was really happening.

It was so exciting when the issue arrived - several friends emailed to say they had read the article so we anxiously checked the mail each day.

The photos were taken in early November and since they would be in the August issue
I had to bring all my summer decor down from the attic.

One of the things that cracks me up is that almost no room in the house looks the same as it did 9 months ago - we have a new sofa, the ottoman is gone and the green and yellow table is now blue.

The dining room looks much the same, but I do have a fun new change to show you in another post.

I hovered around the photographer and got some great tips for making my photos better.

I love that they included photos of Steve's studio - he's already gotten a few calls about his paintings.

Both the guest room and our bedroom have some big changes since the photo shoot.

Last fall we were deep into a multi-year drought and the garden was not as lush and green as it is today.

Just look at the difference after a rainy winter and actually being able to water the garden.

In a world of neutral shades, I love that this issue is filled with color and that our house was featured with so many beautiful houses including this house below which belongs to Erin of My Painted Garden.

A big thank you to all of you who read my blog, encourage me to try new things and inspire me - if not for you, this unexpected pleasure would never have occurred.

That's wonderful that your husband's work got more exposure too. Your home inspires me, especially your kitchen shelves. You wouldn't want to hop a plane and come do mine, would you? 20. BRAVA BRAVA, Carol!!!!! Isn't it a fun feeling to see your home in a magazine? I don't know about you, but now that we've had our home in a magazine, I see my great room especially, as an iconic space. To see in in the glossy pages then to see it in person every day is a weird and wonderful sensation.

Your home has always been magazine-worthy, and though you've made some revisions, every change has been enchanting. That's the life of artists - always seeing what else can be done!

  42. Carol, I am catching up on my subscriptions backlog while on a little vacation in FL, dreaming of cottages, and there yours is in Cottages and Bungalows!! How very timely and perfect! I knew it was yours before I started reading with those unmistakable primary colors and entry. What a nice job they did in showcasing your wonderful cottage and all the rooms. So happy to see this. C&B has risen as my top choice in the Engaged Media magazines. Jickie's doing a great job as editor. Congrats on the feature!

  43. Wow that is exciting but doesn't surprise me. Your place is always colorful or down right cute. I'm always amazed what you can do with a simple change or throwing in a little color with a bottle, towels or whatever.
It takes me forever to get things to look right and complete. 6 years later and my house still feels incomplete but no matter now it's on the market.

  44. I so enjoyed the post and imagined it also with your present changes. Change is always fun! I hope I don't even change back my painted turn of the century oak though - now wouldn't that be work! Love your cottage flair!
