Happiness is . . .

I spotted this message on Instagram this morning

and it pretty much sums up my philosophy of life.

Happiness is the lavender trim and tidy

because the bees let me work alongside them.

Happiness is fall decor in the dining room,

living room and even in the garden.

And, it is the angle of the sun in the fall - the pumpkins look like they have been lit up.

Happiness is making new friends on Instagram who challenge you to post for a hashtag like #plumplaidpickins,

finding enough fall flowers to fill a drawer

and creating a new look in the entry.

Happiness is crying tonight from the beginning to the end of an uplifting true story

that evoked wonderful memories of our life in Jamaica.

I hope you had a happy day.

  1. I agree 100%. In fact, one of the reasons my husband gives to others when asked how we've been married for over 34 years is this: "We are easily amused." We both find happiness in counting bunny rabbits on weekend mornings in our neighborhood. We giggle and are giddy over making a pot of tea and sitting together binge watching either Downton Abbey or West Wing. I turn 8 years old again when I see the sunrise and literally JUMP for joy when I see just a sliver of a moon from my kitchen window. Yes, happiness comes in small doses.

And your new white space HAS GOT TO BE making you happy, Carol. A perfect backdrop for any color or décor!

  4. I love the way you are able to bring fall and beach together. This is something I struggle with every time I make the attempt. Everything looks so lovely.

This is a great post and wonderful message / reminder.

  7. Well, these are all the cheeriest pictures! You live up well to your philosophy. I love Andy Rooney and that wonderful quote. We have that movie on our list just to see Uganda again. I'm so glad that you recommend it so highly! Thanks so much for stopping by and bringing such cheer to my day! (As you know, I joined Instagram, but I think it has turned out to be just a bridge too far for me. That is so opposite what everyone else seems to say!)

  10. As we've gotten older it takes less to make us happy - maybe we realize (finally dawned on us) that life really is rather short and each day should be filled with some simple pleasure. Your post is a good reminder of how abundant happiness can be if you give it a chance to be discovered.

  13. I think happiness is a choice not an emotion. And it is the little things you do and enjoy and are grateful for every single day that matters.

Lovely post written by a lovely lady!

  17. Hi Carol You are so right. It's the little things that make me happy: a bunny nibbling in our garden, deer wandering through the backyard, sunlight streaming through the trees, a spider web gleaming in the sunshine after a rain, the little chipmunk scooting back and forth across our deck storing up nuts for winter, a cup of tea, FaceTime with the grandkids. That's what makes me happy :)

  18. Lovely post...you have captured the truth of those words so well. I love all your beautiful fall photos. The low autumn sunlight inspired me here today too...so many small things to enjoy and appreciate if we look for them.

  19. these are the things that not only make me very happy but very thankful, too...and, now, of course, I am looking for an olden drawer to fill with flowers and put cute knobs on....

  21. Good Morning Carol, Your post really made me smile. The sunshine just beams from this post.
I think when we are younger, we are busy with life and children, but as we grow older, we are able to slow down a little and have the time to appreciate the little things in life.
Do you know, one of the things which makes me smile is.... I think this will surprise you. I feel happy when I walk past a coffee shop and the smell of coffee permeates the air. Of course there are a hundred other things which make me happy, but right at this very moment, it is the smell of coffee.... I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I have just made a coffee using freshly ground coffee.
    Have a happy day.
    Best Wishes
    Daphne

  22. I love this post and Andy Rooney's words are so true! I just wrote a favorite things post and it is all about the simple things in life that make you happy. Like pumpkin butter cookies or selfies with your daughters and sisters. It's the day to day that you do so perfectly and capture it all on your blog!

  24. A friend I haven't seen in a while emailed me today with a whole list of huge life plans - all wonderful for her - and I was feeling a bit blue after I responded that I spend as much time as possible home with my pups and have no huge plans - or even little plans. But then I consider that home is what makes me happy. Seeing the leaves start to turn and feeling the cooler air of fall makes me giddy, and that deep deep blue of the sky shortly after the sun goes down thrills me. My husband talking to our dogs makes me smile, and piddling in my craft room makes me content. Thank you for sharing that quote, and showing that there are others out there who feel this way.

  25. This is an important lesson to learn. Happiness for me was spending last night with extended family members that I don't see nearly enough. We laughed until our sides hurt. Happy!
