Change Happens

Change, constant change, is Steve's major complaint about me!

But, change happens sometimes when you are not expecting it.

Until last week, the guest room looked like this.

Our daughter has been staying with us during the week since October, but KC moved back to the Bay Area and took much of her decor/furniture with her.

I spent the last few days putting together the room because we have a special guest coming this week.

In my old age, I am realizing that I don't need to always be purchasing new items

so my goal for the room was to spend no money and only use things I had on hand.

The checkered shams are an old IKEA purchase and the white quilt was on our bed until last summer.

A favorite quilt adorns the foot of the bed complimented by pillows that have been used on our bed, on the window seat in the dining room, on the living room sofa and even outside on the chaises.

The little stool at the foot of the bed is one of several pieces KC returned to me after stealing it when she moved to town.

Among the things KC left behind were the navy suede headboard on the bed and her IKEA dresser - it's old, but does the trick for now.

My original plan was shelves and baskets on this wall, but I decided that "less is more" and I asked my resident artist for paintings.

The chair was a cheap Tuesday Morning purchase that I love tucking into empty corners.

While KC was with us, this little table served as a night stand, but I had other ideas for next to the bed so the table fills a space between the windows - Steve added one of my favorite truck paintings.

I have always wanted to use a ladder for shelves and finally I have the perfect spot.

Originally we hung a painting over the bed, but it was overwhelming

so an old screen hangs above the bed and a little bag for candy (empty for now or Lulu would try to get it) awaits our guest who will arrive on Friday.

Steve's most recent painting hangs above a table I moved into the bedroom from the living room.

I am eagerly awaiting my cousin Vicki's arrival

as is Lulu - although she might be waiting for KC to come home.

I am happy with the room and pleased with myself that I didn't buy anything except flowers

and fresh flowers are a change that Steve can handle!

  1. Change is often good! I admire you for doing the room without any additional shopping. I recently styled the shelves in a new bookcase with things I already had here in the house. It was fun to search through my things for those special items that I wanted to include.
    Hope you are doing better.

  2. Very pretty, Carol, I like all the changes. Love the trucks he paints. Over the years, I've found some really cute linens at Ikea. I don't purchase many new items for my home either, because I have too much, despite donating, or giving it to siblings.

  7. A beautiful guest room! I love how you styled the ladder and the screen above the bed with the little bag of candy is the perfect touch. I always love seeing what you're up to! Have a great week and enjoy your cousins visit. I'll be cleaning out our attic... much needed!

  8. I sure love coming to visit you. I am also glad that though I stopped blogging that I have NOT stopped visiting my favorites, and coming here is like coming home. Like you dear Carol, in my more mature years now, I realize I don't need certain things (then there are OTHER things that I don't mind purchasing!!!!!) but that rearrangement (like in a poem) is an art. Change is always occurring in our home with a change-out of pillows for spring, beach shells for summer, and certain but simple elements for the holidays. Keeping the changes manageable are what makes it fun and low-cost!

I love the idea of the chalkboard in the guest room so you can change out names that grace your home. And of course Miss THANG there, waiting for her walk on the beach with that look just charms my heart. I hope you are well and getting better every day. Hugs to you dear Carol! Anita

  10. Warm, inviting, just the right amount of visual stimulation. Pinning, sharing! I am with you when it comes to shopping what you already own first. I have seldom decided just go buy all new, and honestly, I have always been happier collecting things I love and then using them as the opportunity presents itself. The flowers are gorgeous and the perfect last touch. Hope you all enjoy your company.

  12. Such a welcoming room for a weary traveller! I love the ladder shelf, and wonder do you secure the ladder to the wall or is just leaning there. Steve's paintings are wonderful, and I love them all! They really "make" the room :) Your cousin won't want to leave! Have a great visit. Wendy

  14. Isn't it nice to "shop the house" and rearrange things in a new way? I love your guest room. It is comfortable, welcoming, and cheerful. So cool that you can just ask the resident artist in your house for a painting for the walls. Tim and I keep talking about framing our photographs (mostly his) and doing a gallery wall...we need to stop being talkers and start being doers! I hope that your hand is feeling better and that it didn't take you an entire day to write this post.

  15. The room is so welcoming and warm! I love the additions and the screen above the bed is really sweet. I've been trying to shop my home as I downsize and only keep what I love. I bet Lulu isn't the only one who misses KC!

  16. I just love the room. I just proves we don't always need to buy new things. By moving things around and shopping the house, it can create a fresh new look. You have created a warm and inviting space.

  21. Hello, Carol!
I have the same issue with Mr D. It does not help that I have a 20 year background in fashion merchandising. He will come home from work on a Saturday and say, "I see that you have been re -merchandising again!" The beauty of re-merchandising is making the "older stock" look fresh again! You, my friend are fabulous at this feat of art!

Tell Steve that I love the rotating art gallery in your home. It is what make visiting you so special and different in blog land.

Vicki will feel will feel welcome, honored and warm while wrapped in your charming new guest room.

I really like the smaller display above the bed.

  34. I love the changes in your guest room. Change is good thing, but my hubs feels the same way your does. He says he never knows what to expect when he walks in the door...to me that's a good thing. Congrats on being featured at the Old Painted House! Maybe someday someone will ask me :-{. I've been missing in action, spending a lot of time in my greenhouse where it's warm in side without heat! Is your hand feeling better?

  61. Carol, it looks lovely! I love the blue chair and the ladder! I have a chippy white one folded up out on the porch. Been needing to bring her in for a new look. May do that soon. My hubby is so use to me always changing, but I'm sure it annoys him a bit as well. But I have to tell you a funny story. One of my friends came to our front door and hubby answered. I heard her say, "I swear her porch is different every time I come here". He laughed and said, 'That's her job". Glad to know that he thinks it's a job. lol! Now back to the room. The bedding is perfect and I love the screen.
